Hello,

I have a Leica M2 that I believe is a M2X. It doesn’t have a self timer. From what I’ve been able to gather, Some sources I have seen do not include my cameras SN. Does anyone have any information about this type of variant? How “rare” is this version? Most of the M2s I see without the self timer have the button rewind not the lever rewind as mine has. I had a CLA done on it when I received it and it looked like it had the factory Leica L wax seal before I sent it off. So I don’t think it was a Frankenstein camera.

Thanks in advance!

Some work has certainly be done. The transport lever is not the original one, this one comes from an M4 or an early M4-2. I am not sure what you mean by M2X though. Early M2's lacked the self-timer and according to Laney from serial number 1.004.151 most M2's had a self timer. So your camera is one of those that wasn't yet fitted with the self-timer and I believe it was produced in 1962.

E. Leitz USA catalog #41 from 6-68 lists item 10,300 as Leica M2X without lens....$214.00

Item 10,308 "Leica M2 with self-timer but without lens....$249.00"

Preceding page adds "M 2X  The M2X is a variation of the M2 with self timer eliminated"

In 1966 a friend in college had both M2 and M2X bodies - both lever rewind as I recall. First Leica I borrowed and used with 50 2.8 Elmar and 90 T.E. I don't recall that M2X was engraved - just what he told me it was.

Thanks for the information, I have seen more button rewind M2s than the lever rewinds. Are the lever rewinds better or worse? More rare / collectible?

I don't think anybody would collect an M2 based on the rewind button/lever. The overall condition is more important or an interesting serial number, it's as fickle as that. The only M2's that are properly collectible are the ex-military surplus M2-R or KS15-4 or black paint versions. And all the so called 'X' means is 'budget'.

Thanks for the info, I just didn’t know what is considered collectible with these cameras.

It's a great camera, better than an M3 to my mind, get some film and enjoy it!

I do love the viewfinder. It’s so clear compared to other cameras I’ve used. So far I love it!
