My M11-P's rear screen seems to significantly darken from the center outwards after the camera's been on for 30+ minutes.  By this I mean that the edges of the screen remain relatively bright while the inner 75+% darken to the point of being very unreliable.  I've tried adjusting the screen brightness but to not avail.  This -seems- to be most pronounced in colder weather.  The battery is always at 80-85% when this phenomenon appears.

Is anyone else having such trouble?

I saw the similar phenomenon on my m11 in extremely cold weather last year about -20 C.

But not as profound as you described, and it's just the edge getting darkened.

I think it's normal in cold weather. But 75% darkened in the centre seems too much. How cold is it where you are?

Chicago.  So the weather was not very severe when this was at its worst.  Perhaps 40-45F (4-7C).  It gets worse the longer the camera is on.  I -think- completely powering-off for a while helped but I was in the heat of shooting on this most recent incident and just turned the screen off completely as it was no longer usable.

Is the camera body warm while its happening? Could it be due to the heat generated while shooting extensively ?

Are you saying that you are shooting in liveview for very long periods of time?

The camera is not warm when this happens.
Yes I see it in live view.

After shooting in MUCH colder weather yesterday I don’t think this is related to outdoor temp. I think it may be related to screen brightness setting. Auto setting is barely visible and medium+ manual settings produce banding across the screen in darker scenes.

Could be a defective screen.

But first, I would go in to the Leica M11 Menu and turn off AUTO brightness on screen on menu screen 4.

If that does not do the job, I would send a mail to customer service at cs@leica-camera.com and await their response.

I had the same thing happen with my M11P. I have had the camera for about 2 months. Shooting in Hood River, Oregon with an ambient temp of about 7 degrees Celsius -  not very cold! Battery level approximately 80%.

As with KenTanaka the centre of the screen was very dark (barely visible) and the borders were normal brightness. This affected approximately 90% if the LCD pixels. This phenomena persisted even when trying to view Menus.

Once the camera was off for a while (~1/2 hour) and I was back inside there was less central darkness but a vague residual brownish dimming in the central 1/3 of the LCD.  The next morning the LCD is back to normal.

The creen brightness setting was not on auto.

Is this a defective screen that should be fixed under warranty?

Thanks.

@racairns Did you have Leica fix your screen issue?  I’m noticing a similar behavior on my m11-p too when I’m in chilly temps.  Also not sure how to demonstrate the issue to my local Leica store when it’s not cold and showing that behavior.

It is gradual - I would guess mildly annoying below zero Celcius and unusable at zero Fahrenheit. But it depends on the technology used, cooling down of the camera, moisture/wind chill etc. .

I just ran into this exact problem while outside on a windy day here in New York.  Same exact affect described.  Was anyone able to fix this either through service or some sort of other fix?  Is this a design flaw or does my M11 need service?

Hi all,

I was out shooting yesterday.  It was a slightly windy day but not too crazy and the temperature was around 40 degrees Fahrenheit above freezing and I noticed as the hour progressed and I had my M11-P slung over my shoulder that the rear LCD screen kept getting darker and darker despite adjusting any LCD brightness settings.
At one point I could barely see the characters on the LCD screen so I popped the battery out and power cycled the camera but the issue still persisted.   The camera still shot pictures but I just couldn’t preview the images at all.

I google searched this issue and a couple of other people mentioned this happening in cold weather.  But in those threads it was not confirmed if this was a defect or design flaw in the M11 cameras.

I’m wondering if others have experienced this and if so have anyone gotten there camera serviced or been explained this is something that happens?  Just trying to understand if this is common with M11’s or if I need to get it serviced.

I'm going to go out shooting again today but with the leather case on to see if that helps keep the camera warmer.  But would love to hear from others.  Thanks!

Any LCD will do that. You will also notice that it gets slower as the liquid (the L from LCD) congeals and finally freezes if it gets cold enough. The operating temperature of the Leica  M11 is 0 ºC  to +40 ºC Most cameras follow this specification. These temperatures are dictated mainly by the batteries, LCDs and possibly any condensers that may be present, but normally you will be able to use your camera for a limited time outside this temperature range.  Just keep the camera under your parka when not in use and a spare battery in a warm pocket.

Freezing temperatures can also impact the overall brightness and contrast of LCDs. The backlighting system can struggle to function optimally at lower temperatures, leading to dimmer displays with reduced visibility in bright environments

From: https://blinksandbuttons.net/what-happens-if-you-freeze-an-lcd/

Don't let this article scare you - the temperatures that will damage your display are below -20ºF.  40ºF with wind chill sounds about right for the effect you observed.

This is strange though as I don’t experience this with my Canon or Sony cameras or Fuji cameras in the past with similar climate conditions.

Is it just that the LCD screen on the M cameras are just that much more sensitive?  I’d totally understand if I was in below freezing temperatures but I really wasn’t in that cold of an environment but the LCD screen dipped rapidly and didn’t recover for hours after I got home.  I was definitely within the operating temperatures you mention.

@peterepriceI @opticagent Hi, I have been communicating with a technical manager at Leica in New Jersey. He has asked me to send images and a video and at the same time document the ambient temperature. My issue is intermittent and have not had the opportunity to capture this yet. I do know that the times this has happened the ambient temperature was nowhere near 0 degrees celcius and the problem was more than mildly annoying. Hopefully I can catch this and send it in soon. How cold was it in New York when this happened to your camera Peter?

About 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit with some winds.

@petereprice@If anyone can update this forum with more documentation images and an image to document the ambient temp might be helpful. It is already getting warmer on the west coast. I have referred the technical manager to this forum.

Thanks!

I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this issue when using a half leather case with their M11’s.  I’m working on a theory about where this issue might be coming from but need to test more.  I have a theory that when the temperature goes down on the lower area of the camera where the battery is, the issue arises but with a leather protector over the bottom half of the camera it may take a lot colder weather for the issue to arise.  But I’m still testing this theory.  Today is a perfect day to test as its 35 degrees Fahrenheit here.
