I just bought a new M11 and I am trying to understand the menu and settings. So I am looking for the list of lenses to choose from, the manual says it should show after choosing Lens detection and then Manual M. But no list is showing. How do I get to that list?

Thanks, Lex

I edited the list of M lenses in the M11 menu. Many of my older Leitz/Leica lenses are not available in that list, nor are those lenses from other companies like Canon or Nikon, who both produced lenses in M39 mount.

I know many people use such older lenses on their digital M bodies. Is there perhaps a list of such lenses with the best choice from the list in the camera, if any?

Perhaps this question has been asked many times before, but I am new in this field of digital M.

Thanks, Lex

I think it worth you researching this. The 'correction' applied in-camera is minimal, zero for 50mm and longer and mild vignetting correction for wider lenses - that's it.

The main advantage is to have the lens recorded in EXIF data. You can select a proxy and remember what you used, but l think it unlikely Leica will ever include their whole back catalogue as so few would be interested, and they will have absolutely zero interest in other makes. IMHO.

Thanks you two. I am trying to understanhd how to use either list. So the Zeiss list, I use the 2/35 Biogon ZM. Does it work like this that I look for the 2/35mm in the top horizontal list and then check with which Leica lens the camera gives good results? So for my Bion ZM 35mm I should choose one of the 28mm Leica lenses or the the on 35mm with result 'gut'?

In the other list with Leica lenses I don't find some of the lenses I like to use, like the Summaron 35mm, the Summitar 50mm, the Summarit 1.5/50mm, or the various older Elmar 90mm lenses.

I also use a Canon 1.5/50mm , Konica M-Hexanon 2/50mm, Steinheil Culminar 85 and 135mm and a few others, every now and then. I guess it may be a matter of trial and error then.

• Yes but given that the 6-bit correction is mainly useful on vignetting and that the M11 needs to know the actual focal length of lenses, i would choose preferably the profile or the code of the Summicron 35/2 v4 (order 11310, code 000110) that has similar vignetting as the Biogon 35/2.
[...] In the other list with Leica lenses I don't find some of the lenses I like to use, like the Summaron 35mm [...]
• 35/2.8 or 35/3.5? If 35/3.5, i have no experience sorry. If 35/2.8 i would choose the same Summicron 35/2 v4 profile or code (order 11310, code 000110).
[...] the Summitar 50mm [...]
• Similar vignetting as Summicron 50/2 v5 (order 11826, code 100001)
[...] the Summarit 1.5/50mm [...]
• Similar vignetting as Summilux 50/1.4 v2 (order 11868, code 000101)
[...] various older Elmar 90mm lenses [...]
• My experience is limited to the collapsible Elmar 90/4 which has similar vignetting as Macro-Elmar 90/4 (order 11633, code 100111)
[...] I also use a Canon 1.5/50mm, Konica M-Hexanon 2/50mm [...]
• No idea about the Canon but the Konica 50/2 is a clone of the Summicron 50/2 v5 (order 11826, code 100001)
[...] Steinheil Culminar 85 and 135mm [...]
• No idea sorry.
Happy snaps 🙂

Thanks, your information is very helpful, since I am completely new in the digital area.

About the collapsible Elmar 90/4 the instruction manual of the M11 says it is not compatible. Apparently Leica wants to prevent people from damafing sensor and shutter, which should not be the case when the lens is pulled out. How do you use this collapsible lens?

I don't. I guess the rigid Elmars have the same vignetting but i have no experience wth them. I have an Elmar-C 90/4 though. It has very little vignetting so it can be coded as most 90mm Leica lenses that have little vignetting too.

When I cannot find an exact match with a lens I'm using, I find the M lens that is the closest match to the one I'm using.

As mentioned above 50mm and over is only good for giving you EXIF data since correction is probably null.

Keep trying for EXIF. On some of my Voigtlander M lenses I have coded them so that the 6-bit sensor can read the lens FL.

Leica advises blocking the barrel with Dymo tape. But check that it does not hit the inside of the camera when half-collapsing, and mount extended.
