dante Posted February 23 Share #3 Posted February 23 In general, the best non-Leica flashes to use are Nikon speed lights that support A mode because the "ready" pin is the same as the Leica and will trigger the correct synch speed. But non-Leica flashes lose TTL operation, auto-zoom for focal length, and high-speed synch with M cameras. Dante
jto555 Posted March 3 Share #4 Posted March 3 Most non Leica flashes will default to the centre pin to fine the flash. One upside is that they can "beat" the flash sync speed. In other words the camera can fire at a faster speed than the sync speed. Yes, only part of the frame will be illuminated by the flash but with careful subject placement you can get a shot at 1/500th sec with the subject against the bright sky, for example. I use it all the time.
dugby Posted March 4 Share #5 Posted March 4 Not sure how extensively you have researched within these Leica forum pages. There are references to a third party website “botzilla” that does collate the trigger voltages of many electronic flashes, which can guide your decision making for flash choice on any Leica M Many here have reported their experience with various manufacturers flashes.

Something like the FL36 is both small and with a swing tilt head, features you don't often get on a flash gun that balances nicely on an M body. jaapv Posted March 13 Share #9 Posted March 13 As far as I am aware, trigger voltage is a non-issue. The M series is safe to 600 V ( Mr. Daniel on the M8 (!) ).I think that the last high-voltage flash dates back to the 1960-ies. https://www.lucan.org.uk/Vintage/Hotshoes/volt_table.html

Yep, i use successfully the Godox X3 trigger and two Godox V1 flashes for Nikon on my SL2 and i am not sure if the X3 works on the M11. The M11 is not on the compatibility list, but Godox is a bit fuzzy with what works and what not and you may contact them first. Also, all small Godox strobes do not work in TTL with the X3 trigger, but do in manual so you should test trigger and flash for working TTL I used successfully a older Metz flash on my Q2 in manual mode. Jamie Roberts Posted March 13 Share #11 Posted March 13 FWIW my Profoto Canon flashes (A10s, I think) work just fine on the M11P in manual, and now there's a full Profoto remote for Leica that really does dial them in properly from the camera. Very pleased with them for wireless flash!

Keine Ahnung.... yep, Leica totally forgot about creating light for images. they convinced many Leica photographers to use natural light, so they don't have to keep up with new flashes.

PhotoCruiser Posted March 19 Share #15 Posted March 19 (edited) Thanks for your important reply! Yes the X3 is not on the list of the compatible cameras and after Godox it will never work. Godox states in a email from the post on DPReview: Unfortunately, our technician responded that the compatibility issue is due to a mismatch in the hotshoe, which cannot be resolved through a firmware update. So it seems that the M11 has a different hots hoe what surprises me as it makes no sense to me. Chris Edited March 19 by PhotoCruiser
