erl Posted Friday at 05:20 AM Share #3821 Posted Friday at 05:20 AM Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I did it! I walked into the Leica Store in Melbourne and picked up the M EV1. No, I didn't buy it, I just fondled it. It's a nice looking camera and feels good in the hand. I was particularly interested in the EVF 'wake-up' time For me that is a real issue. The wakeup was pretty good, but I still had to wait for the image once my eye was in position. Because I am not a serious contender to buy, I didn't 'put it through the hoops' but did somehow get into a discussion about trading in a bunch of my oldies. I do like the Diopter adjustment, finally on an 'M' camera.I still walked away feeling impressed, but not prepared to pony up AU$13000. So I went on my merry way and shot film through my M6, which I am now processing. P.S. The tiny rectangular window on the front is for the Red Led self timer. 🫣

darylgo Posted Friday at 10:44 AM Share #3825 Posted Friday at 10:44 AM For the sake of 200 pages, can someone tell me the advantage of removing the rangefinder/viewfinder? The uniqueness of the M is having a crystal clear viewfinder, also a good LCD and on top of that the ability to add an evf. No other camera has this, I can focus with the rangefinder, view with the evf for perfect framing and use the LCD for quick evaluation and changes. I'm losing the option that makes me return to the M from Nikon and Sony.

So just enjoy. you don’t need the camera and it’s not aimed at you. you could test it, if you like, just to see if all your arguments stick. The camera is aimed at clients that have a bias against the traditional M system, but would like to breath the aura of the new camera. And they are real. They are just not in this forum, but sooner or later they will arrive. There where lots of people that didn’t want a smartphone before the iPhone > but in the end …. Time will tell. The advantage is that you do not need to mount the large-ish EVF and can keep the camera sleek if you are using an EVF anyway. Rear LCD image framing is for me only in emergencies, as I dislike using it to photograph.
Photon42 Posted Friday at 03:00 PM Share #3828 Posted Friday at 03:00 PM (edited) We still wait for the optional rangefinder to be slid onto the accessory shoe 😎 Just like a modern FODIS. Edited Friday at 03:01 PM by Photon42
Derbyshire Man Posted Friday at 06:58 PM Share #3829 Posted Friday at 06:58 PM I popped along to Red Dot Cameras today and had a go. I think it's nice. EVF is Q3 rather than visoflex and that helps. Obviously on auto zoom with first level of mag one gets good results. I can't help but wish it had a 9mp VF like the Sony but that no doubt comes with its own battery & refresh issues. Just that I then wouldn't need zoom at all ever. I'm certainly not in the 'never camp'. Happy with my 2nd hand Q3 at the moment which I mostly use for low contrast situations but maybe in due course might consider one used in the future. It'll have to be quite a long way in the future as I accidentally bought a previously owned summicron m 35mm apo!* [*For those who are very literal I didn't really accidentally buy it, I knew it was there and it was the main reason I went to the shop, just a figure of speech]

I could imagine using an external OVF, as the high contrast scenes are often hard to see in an EVF with highlight protection making it quite dark. From OVF with external EVF, to EVF with external OVF – I think that brings us back to start. 🤪
lct Posted Friday at 10:00 PM Share #3833 Posted Friday at 10:00 PM External OVs have been in use with Leica cameras since the 30s. Young Cartier-Bresson in 1932 here.
FrozenInTime Posted Friday at 10:03 PM Share #3834 Posted Friday at 10:03 PM The M-EV1 is growing on me, with the live histogram in the EVF - just like every other EVIL camera.

FrozenInTime Posted Friday at 10:08 PM Share #3836 Posted Friday at 10:08 PM Are stickers available for the front of the M-EV1, to cover the red dot and add a fake OVF window i.e. make it look like a true M11P - would not want to get into heated arguments with other Leica photographers on the street 😉

A histogram on the sub display is something Leica should add to the M12 request list ; I think Pixii have the lead in overlayed display information. I'm also hoping for a luxury version with black glass and a metal frame around it. Edited Friday at 10:22 PM by evikne

That might be the solution : a GoPro like action camera plugged into the hot shoe, could also proved the offset view needed for a digital rangefinder; it would also be a big plus to those POV Youtube creators Leica is so in love with. LocalHero1953 Posted Friday at 10:32 PM Share #3840 Posted Friday at 10:32 PM (edited) Low light is a challenge for both OVF and EVF. The EVF, with exposure simulation and AF, can see and take a shot of something I can barely see in the dark - I certainly could not have focused this shot with a rangefinder. The downside is that in low light the EVF lag becomes painful - by the time you've got your shot the subject may be elsewhere. Am I the first person to say that all cameras require compromises?
