Sooooo, it seems the M11-V, if that is the correct name, will have the cam since we will be using M lenses. I sure hope just by turning the lens focus barrel it will magnify if that is what the user sets it to do.  I assume with the FN button one can turn magnification off as above for an uninterrupted Live View.

Then to the focus peaking element as leaked on LeicaRumors. Maybe the FN button controls that and has nothing to do with magnification, just simple focus peaking or a plain LV in the EVF.

This could make sense. Turn focus ring and you get magnification and hit FN button for focus peaking or not. Simple to use as you wish.

There are way more permutations to this new possible camera, I suspect.  I’ll wait for Leica’s release with interest, and my wallet closed. What I really want is the digital MP.

Maybe if it really is the M11-V they should announce the camera November (11) the 5th (V)....

But if they do that, it will already be the 6th (VI) here.

We are veering off topic, but I thought it had previously been established that a monochrom won’t work with the Q3 autofocus.  I’m sure there is a thread on this in the Q section.

True a Leica Miami confirmed this to me that the Q3 AF needs color to function.

Problem with focus peaking: it is by far the least accurate of focus aids. Basically it corresponds roughly to DOF. It does not come close to RF focus.

This is exactly the thing. I think this might be exactly correct. I often shut peaking off in annoyance and just focus by eye; we're back to using a loupe on ground glass! (Not that there's anything wrong with that per se, but you'd better take time, and practice...)

Some may later decry the lack of autofocus: "They expect us to do the focusing, with this??!"

Some who never practiced up to the point of facility with a rangefinder will say that the EVF is further evidence that manual focus itself is impractical.

Expect hot threads, headaches for moderators, and resigned sighs from the water buffaloes (like me).

Again the immortal words of Engineer Montgomery Scott (en brogue), "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain!"

Imagine the confusion this will cause!

Doctor: Good news, I got a new M12 camera that’s a little smaller than the previous model.

Patient: Congratulations, it’s a great camera. It takes stunning photos.

Doctor: I’ll be using it for your proctoscopy today.

Patient: What?!

What a sh*tty camera.

Focus peaking can occasionally work fine once understood. I will “walk” it upand own an put the doc if a ( for the middle distance) in the middle of the peaking zone. OTOH a herd (*) of Zebra will produce a complete red-out in the viewfinder.

Matter of practice indeed. Focus peaking works fine for me with M and LTM lenses together with focus magnification. I mean with the M11 but not with the M240 where focus peaking is not visible enough for my eyesight.

I often have to use focus peaking with my TL2 (magnification can take too long).  As I use the TL2 mostly with my 28 Summaron and no EVF (which makes a nice compact package), there’s no chance of accurately hitting the best plain of focus as I would with an M camera.

So there are two choices, really - simply set the focus ring by eye (probably the more accurate option) or use focus peaking (with most of the depth of field lit up).  For the latter, I follow my father’s advice from the 1960’s - reasonable focus is with about 1/3 of the depth of field in front of the subject and 2/3 behind.  It’s a workable rule of thumb …

See, this is the kind of reasonable wisdom passed on widely in the digital-less era. I remember hearing it or reading this one also.

It's a much better rule than we hear these days such as,

"Always set the exposure compensation to -1 to avoid blowing out the highlights..."

Sheesh...
