I'm curious to know your preferences when composing a shot. For me, the viewfinders are arranged in the following order for comfort:

1. OVF on the left (rangefinders)

2. OVF in the center (mirror)

3. Rear screen (the bigger the better)

4. EVF on the left

5. EVF in the center

The same order except Rear screen which would be no.5.

Not sure what to do with numbers.
• With rangefinder: OVF on the left, EVF if any in the center, Rear screen as it is.
• With mirrorless: EVF on the left, OVF if any in the center, Rear screen as it is.

Same order, with no internal EVF period. For some reason they make feel like I'm literally going to have a seizure. Kind of a new thing for me - flashing lights do the same, or recently a cafe I was in that hung decorations swinging from fan blades overhead, as well as the digital rear view mirror. Too bad as I'd kind of like to be able to transition into a mirrorless camera at some point for certain things. Looks like it'll be M's and my D850 for the future.

My preference is:

1. OVF on the left (rangefinders - Leica M)

2 OVF on the left (rangefinders - Mamiya 6)

3 OVF in the center (no rangefinder - Hassy SWC or Leica M 21/28)

4 Waist-level finder (Pro SLRs (Canon F-1, Nikon F/F2/F3, various 6x6) with removable prism)

For low- and high-level whole-picture viewpoints/compositions (at arms' length) without having to kneel down and squint through an EVF eyepiece, or break one's neck trying to see the LCD on the back. And no 'phones/WiFi/FOTOS, please.

One of the great losses in the transitions to AF, multi-mode metering, and "dustproof-sealed" digital SLRs.

I really wish Leica would offer something like this. Hot-shoe LCD accessory using the EVF signal feed. No hinges (just another failure point). And a nice way to suck extra money out of users' pockets €€€€ 😁 with virtually no R&D required (the parts already exist - just put them together)!

Leica - are you listening?

Like many of you, I have a long personal record with cameras and tried and used virtually every type of finder available. The Leica range finder OVF required the most compromises (for me) and is by far the least convenient finder for anything but street. But I do like the system as a whole that’s why I stick to hit.

Therefore my rating:

1. Screen

2. Center Finder EVF or OVF or left side EVF

3. Left Side OVF

1. OVF on the left (RF) -- I've had my M11 for a few weeks now and thus far really like it. Will see how that holds up.

2. Rear LCD screen

3. Everything else

I generally find myself really not like EVFs whether they're left or center.

This would be cool. I actually get so much use out of the 90 degree angle on the visoflex, I use it fully extended most of the time, hunched over and looking down into the evf. It's especially useful for keeping lines straight by avoiding tilting the camera down, and for shooting at a kid's eye level.

For some reason I don't tend to use flip screens on other cameras much, but I do really like built in waist level finders. I shoot a ton of instax on my Rolleiflex  - I wish I had a digital back for it.
I use the Hasselblad digital back on my 500cm film body and absolutely love the waist level finder on that... I'm not sure if it's just because it's a different perspective from what I'm used to but do I really like shooting this way.

As you say, the tech is already there from the visoflex so making a small hotshoe attached lcd screen should be pretty simple.

i prefer your #1, @Smogg : OVF/RF on the left, right eye dominant

I'm right-eye dominant, but I see better with my left eye. If focusing requires extra accuracy, I sometimes have to hold the viewfinder to the other eye. But I'm happy with the placement as it is.
