Just curious to know which camera is your favourite for travels, if you could only pick one?

Last year I was moving around for 2 weeks with my Leica Q and totally loved the quick response and portability (700g) of the system! I'm not too much of a 28mm lens so sometimes I was missing my 35mm.
I was thinking to take my M for my next trip but a bit conscious of the extra weight (around 850g with a lens) + the fact you will have to manually shot each single photo.

What's been your experience whilst traveling?

For travel the Q is my choice. Yes, 28 mm is not the perfect match for every shot. However, solution is built into the camera: digital crop. You know that you can switch to 35/50/75 mm. At least switching to 35 and 50 mm never was a problem printing big even A2. The viewfinder experience with digital crop feels similar to lens changing lenses with the M.

Cheers

M11P with summilux 35mm.

However, I never chose just one or one lens. Often not even one manufacturer!

Although that latter I'm changing as I never feel the urge to pick it up and if I do I don't like the use or results anywhere near so much, even though commonly I have a 35mm on that too!

My travel setup is always the same: at least one M along with a 28mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux. Usually the 28mm is on the camera and the 50 is in a bag or pocket. Sometimes I'll do both M10-R and M10M, sometimes just a single film M.

The Q is a nearly ideal travel camera, but I'm happiest with the M experience.

My travel kit has been M since college days in the 1970's (still have those 2 M4's).   Currently I shoot with M240's.  My default travel lens armamentarium consists of 21 Elmarit PRE-Asph, 35 Cron V4, and 90 "thin" T-E.   Depending on the destination I can reconfigure it wider to 15-28-50 or longer to 28-50-135, but those are atypical and I'm not otherwise a fan of 28mm.   Recently I've been experimenting with a Sony a7rII, substituting the 21 with a Voigtlander VM 15mm Version 3 which is identical optically to the E-mount version in being telecentric enough that there are no issues with the Sony sensor.   The a7rii has a Clear Zoom feature which gives up to 2X seamless zoom, and at 2x is 21mp which is basically the same as the 24mp on my M240.  It gives me the equivalent of 15-30, 35-70 and 90-180 in a very compact, fast and far lighter-weight package than E-mount zooms.  I have no desires for the Q-series because I do a lot of travel in small-town Europe and prefer not being limited to 28mm on the wide end.  YMMV of course.  I also own a 70-210 f/4 Vario-Elmar-R which I use when distant landscapes are expected.  You might ask why I don't simply use EVF on the M240, and the answer is I have done so quite a lot in the past but the lag-time between shots with the EVF is very frustrating compared to the Sony which is nearly instantaneous; and also the Clear Zoom feature; and also the IBIS.   You may also ask why I don't use a Leica SL-series.  That is a very good question and no it isn't mainly about the cost although feature:dollar the Sony certainly comes out in front IMO, albeit the UI of the Sony's are frustrating (essentials buried within layers of menus thus demanding the use of a multitude of CF buttons scattered about as though they were deposited by a sneeze and which I often fail to remember which I programmed to do what).  However the main reasons I don't prefer the SL's is their comparative bulk/weight.

28mm Q2 or Q3 as main camera is for me in 90% enough, 43mm would be too short.
I am a WA guy and often use my 14mm Sigma for street, landscape and the Sigma 105mm macro for macro work on my SL2
For a Safari i would take my Sigma 105mm Macro and the 2x tele converter or buy a 200-500 zoom.
All depend on what you want to photograph

Definite not Q. I am not used to travel with only one prime lens. Even switching lenses on M is not preferred unless it is 28-35-50 MATE, I found XV works better than M+MATE.

The only minimalist set that won’t make you struggle (that is why you are here) would be SLx + your favorite zoom.

For me it depends on what you mean by travel. If I can travel out of my car I take any and all gear I want. BUT if traveling by air then I try to minimize my gear. I now own the Q343 and Q3 28 and almost think they might suffice. I hate to leave my M gear behind but AF on the Q's has me using them much more often these days than I ever imagined. That being said since getting into the Q platform I have also gotten an SL, find the AF enjoyable plus I have a much better long lens selection and find the L Panasonic lenses to be much lighter as well as very sharp at acceptable price levels. For example, the 28-200 is an exceptional lens.

My low weight pack: Q3 43.  Stiching for wider angle. Due to nearly SL Apo-Level lens upscaling/cropping easy…

Heavier: SL3 with the S 30-90 (i prefer the rendering over the L 24-90).

Heavy schlepping, only when tons of light: S3 with the S 30-90…

We live now in the golden times of photography: outstandinh equipment available…
