farnz Posted December 14, 2024 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear All, There's always that period between Christmas and New Year when you've had just about enough of turkey and cranberry jelly sandwiches, the gloss has faded from the presents that you'd so much looked forward to a week ago, you've now done all the chores you'd been putting off for 'a while', and you're left wondering what to do next? Well, why not join us in London and meet up with forum members you haven't seen for awhile or haven't met in person and have a laugh or two, talk a lot of nonsense, and, if the mood takes you, take a gentle stroll with us through a part of the city that you might not be familiar with? We'll meet at The Garrick Arms pub in Charing Cross Road at 11.30 am on Monday 30th December for a refreshment of choice and possibly a bite to eat and when we're ready we'll wander towards Seven Dials and down into Covent Garden and then see what we feel like doing depending on the weather, ravaging thirst, ravenous hunger, darkness, civil insurrections etc. My mobile number hasn't changed (ending -888) but if you haven't met me yet and would like to stay connected in case the group manages to get split up then please drop me a PM and we can exchange numbers. I'd be grateful if you'd let me know here if you're intending to come along so we'll have an idea of numbers and I look forward to seeing you on 30th! Pete.

Sandokan Posted December 15, 2024 Share #4 Posted December 15, 2024 I am thinking about it. My daughter is holidaying in London without me and staying at my sister's. If I turn up, she would be furious. It might be worth the risk. I will keep you posted. 3

Dan Bachmann Posted December 15, 2024 Share #6 Posted December 15, 2024 I'd love to join, but I will be working that day until 6pm and may have company in the evening. That said, If you are still kicking around after 6, perhaps I could join you. My number is the same as before ending in 198.

I'm sorry you won't be available, Dan, but I have your number and will let you know if we're still going at 6 o'clock (or, who knows, have all taken up 'residence' in small rooms with bars on the windows? 😄). andybarton Posted December 15, 2024 Share #8 Posted December 15, 2024 I’d have come (provided that the trains are running) but 29th is the only time that both our children and spouses can make it here. Trying to get an early train from up here isn’t going to be an option.
farnz Posted December 15, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted December 15, 2024 Sorry to hear that, Andy, but I hope you and Ann spend a very pleasant festive season anyway. Pete.
andybarton Posted December 15, 2024 Share #10 Posted December 15, 2024 It’ll just be us and the dog at Christmas. Next year, I’ll get more organised and see if we can’t rent somewhere in Scotland for the week. We did that in 2019 and it was a great week. My Mum was very worried about how we’d get our turkey up there (or buy one when we got there). She just couldn’t get a grip with the fact that we wouldn’t have turkey.
farnz Posted December 15, 2024 Author Share #11 Posted December 15, 2024 I've heard that in Wester Ross, if you leave the window open at night a turkey'll quietly slip through the window and snuggle up beside you in bed. Pete. PS, on second thought, that might have been a haggis rather than a turkey.
NaAn Posted December 15, 2024 Share #12 Posted December 15, 2024 I was looking forward for this meeting but unfortunately I’m away. I wish you all a very happy time together and fantastic end of the year.

Graham (G4FUJ) Posted December 17, 2024 Share #14 Posted December 17, 2024 Hit the local TV news earlier - trains from the West country (e.g. Bristol, Gloucester) will not run into or depart from Paddington in the period between Christmas and New Year. instead the services that run will be diverted to Euston. 1

That's interesting, as I think our trains that normally go to Waterloo are going to Paddington!
