Perfect or better old 135? I'd vote for the Tele-Elmar 135/4 that had no competitor but the Elmarit 135/2.8 with goggles, among M-mount lenses, until the current Apo-Telyt 135/3.4 and after the earlier Elmar 135/4. The Tele-Elmar can be used with no compromise at full aperture and can compete IQ wise with the Apo-Telyt 135/3.4. Couple of snaps with M11 below.

The shutter curtain always opens and closes randomly when shooting with the M11 attached to the Elmar 50/3.5, have you noticed this?

I haven't noticed the behavior you're describing. Can you describe what you're seeing in greater detail?

I have no experience with the Elmar 50/3.5 but the only influence my coded Elmar 50/2.8 could have on the shutter action comes from its 6-bit code. The Elmar 50/3.5 being uncoded, @Baggio_YY may wish to enter the corresponding lens profile in the lens detection menu (50 f/2.8 11831/11823/11824).

IT is hard to see how a specific lens can influence the shutter action. What do you mean by “randomly”?

Not the lens itsself but perhaps the L-to-M adapter used with it. Adapters for the 50mm Elmar in screw mount need a spareout to avoid the focus knob colliding with the adapter. With this spareout the sensor to read the lenses 6-bit-code won‘t be covered. So the camera may „think“ that there is no lens attached. Usually then it won‘t open the shutter at all. Though it may occur that the ambient light is rather low which may allow the shutter to open and shut again randomly. One has to switch lens detection off to avoid this.

Yes it’s not the lens but the L-M adapter. You can find adapters with a different design like the rayqual which are very high quality and that cover the 6bit area, to solve this issue or follow the approach above (I still prefer to have an adapter that does not let that digital area of the mount open to dust, etc). The elmar itself has nothing to do with it.

In case of LTM lens, my better fix is to use a 6-bit coded LTM to M adapter. This allows the lens to be recognized by the camera which applies the correspoding lens profile automatically. Otherwise i use a silver or brass uncoded adapter with no cutout in the way of the coding area, which allows to select a lens profile manually. Beware that black uncoded adapters like some Rayqual copies may cause the camera to believe there is no lens attached and to display "No Lens" in lieu of the lens profile. The LV mode cannot work then and in RF mode, shutter speeds must be set manually.

There is no such lens in the manual lens parameter list, so U can only turn off the lens recognition setting. all operations on the M11 body become manual mode, and of course the live preview does not work. The shutter curtain opens and closes randomly during framing, which is annoying!

Thanks, previously set this lens parameter instead (50 f/2.8 11831/11823/11824), but the phenomenon remains the same :(

My vintage Elmar 50/3.5 was produced in 1955, a later red-letter version with blue coating.

I upgraded M11 firmware (FW:2.2.0), lens detection set to 50/2.8, dust protection turned off, and the shutter curtain problem has not recurred.

Thanks Fans!

The latest firmware 2.2.0 solves the problem of compatibility with old lenses, real-time preview and metering can be used normally now!

Take a look in the Leica M Lenses forum, there's a thread there called 'the view through older glass' which has some great examples.

I really like the old collapsible 1930s + 1940s 50mm f/2 Summar and Summitar lenses. Wide open they have a soft glow which really tones down the harshness of a digital sensor. I have the Elmar as well which has similar(ish) characteristics but is only f/3.5 widest.

My favourite portrait lens is probably the Canon 50mm f/0.95 (adapted to M mount), just because it's so different to anything else I have, and the background has a visual interest all of its own. Not to everyone's taste but I enjoy it on both M11 + SL2. Pic below.
