I know I know, its often asked. But alway good to brainstorm with people more knowledgeable then me

I am asking in this forum as there is no general M forum, and 2/3 are M10s !!

For me, I have had an M10, but not an M10-P or an M11 before

I need it for a project involving street photography during travel

The thing is value vs results. Of course nobody needs more then an M2 for good photos, but there is a cost/functionality matrix.

I am trading in one M body, and the choice is an upgrade cost after trade-in:

1. M10 Black - £1000

2. M10-P (Silver - can't get a black at the moment, which I would have prefered) - £2100

3. M11 (black) - £3500

What matters to me ? With the M10-P I am getting silenter shutter, which is very useful. With the M11 I am dropping the weight and getting higher resolution and better battery life.

The thing is what is worth. The most expensive camera will depreciate the most. The M10 probably wont at all, and appreciate if kept in good condition.

The difference is a good voigtlander or used good Leica lens. (I need to buy a 50mm f1.5/f1.4 - don't ask ....)

My head is telling me to get the M10-P, as I don't really need more and the silent shutter is great for more subtle shooting. My heart is telling me to get the M11, as I would keep it for longer, and it is more future proofed, e.g. in terms of battery availability, updates, etc. My pocket is telling me to get the M10.

What do you guys think ?

The silent shutter is not the only thing the M10-P has over the M10. There is also a level gauge, which struck me as pretty pointless when first introduced but turned out to be important once Leica introduced the Perspective Control feature. There may be other bits and bobs, I'm not sure. Whether that might be useful to you, only you can say.

My own view is that often the -P variant is what the original release should have been, and this is truer with the M10 than most.

Good luck, whatever you choose!

Im my completely subjective view the silent shutter does not matter for Street Photography. Too much environmental noise and the differences are not that large. Try it yourself from two meters away from the camera. The M11 gives you much more crop ability, which may come in handy if you can't frame the scene exactly as you wish.

4: M10-R. Best of both worlds - the higher mp count of the M11 (that 16mp makes a difference if one ever crops), and the silent shutter of the P. As well as a lower base iso.

i second that, i wondered why the m10r wasnt even on the list?

what speaks for the M11 is the electronic shutter, so its completely silent, mind that jello effect though

Thirded!

I agonised that upgrading to the R from the base 10 was just GAS and did I need it etcetc and even 2 years later I still consider it one of my best ever camera decisions

I would also say M10-R would be a good choice. But there is one thing that nobody mentioned that would speak for an M11(-P): internal memory! If it's for a project (paid or private) and travel is involved, it sounds like you will take a lot of pictures that can not easily be redone. Even though I never had an SD card fail, the duplicate files on internal memory and SD give me an enormous peace of mind in these situations. Of course, the M11 family has it's own set of problems with freezes and overwriting images and whatnot, but that is luckily something that so far never happend on my M11-P with any firmware.

Another vote for the M10-R.  On my shelve there's also an M10-P and M11 and I choose the M10-R 99% of the time..

why do you not choose the M11 ? (its lighter and higher resolution)

Everything you gain on a camera is usually at the expense of something else. If you don’t need the resolution then those other aspects might be more attractive.

Fifthed

For something between 2100 and 3500 I would get the M10-R then, with the same quiet shutter and much better colors compared to the M10 or -P and not the magenta problems of the M11

I used the M11 daily for over a year.  Loved many things about it but the clunky shutter and magenta tint were too much of a nuisance.  The M10-R shutter is bliss and the colors and WB/Tint are almost always right on.  And (subjectivity) I find the "look" of the M10R/M sensor most pleasing.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to go for the M10-P. I think it saves a useful amount over the M11.

The main reason to buy over the M10 was mainly the quieter shutter and a little bit to do with the better looks :) . However I aim to experiment with the touch screen and perspective control.

The M10-R prices are too close to recently reduced M11 prices, so I probably would have gone for a M11 at the cost.

I get along well, using the M10, without a silent shutter, but, it would not be useless. I get along well, without Perspective Control, but, can certainly understand its usefulness. I rarely use the touch screen feature, with my DSLRs that have that capability, but, now and then, I remember to use it, and find it useful. So, you did well, by opting for the M10-P.

thanks

its not a silent shutter, more like an M10 shutter that has been dulled

pictures are ethereal though: with a Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 ii

I traded my 3 year old m240 for a like new black M10 with two batteries. After another 3-4 years my M10 is bulletproof. Great camera and works well at low light. I don’t understand this shutter sound obsession. The shutter is very quiet but mind you I have been using dslrs for years with a shutter/mirror sound that is loud.

Personally, I'd go for the M10-R.

  • 40 MP (if you need the resolution)
  • Great colours
  • Quiet shutter, same as in M10-P
  • Beautiful minimalist design complete with bottom plate
  • It may age and depreciate very well, as the last naturally-aspirated Ferrari

As for the M11, in my opinion, they’ve strayed too far from what a Leica rangefinder is meant to be. I don't like its busy shutter sound, magenta cast, unnecessary extra button on the top (which I have no use for), and the exposed USB socket on the bottom—all detract from its appeal for me.
