My '57 M3 DS started producing this stripe on the right side of the negative, as shown.
This only happens at 1/1000. Am I correct that the 'closing curtain break' needs to be adjusted?
Any idea why this is happening.

  • DreiPunkte changed the title to M3 DS shutter error 1/1000

For me, I had same kind of trouble, if other speeds are ok, I would not use 1/1000 which is well known for it's inconsistency.

When I use Leica M and LTM (same type of cloth blinds), over years the fastest shutters are mostly avoid.

Sometimes, CLA can cure this but not always in my case, sometimes temperature (hot/cold) dependant ...

I may be wrong just as user.

black stripe is overexposed, it could be that the second curtain is bouncing or it brakes too early. In both cases it may be cured by adjusting brake for the second curtain and/or controlling the brake for opening curtain. You may check break for the opening curtain so: open back door, set speed to B, shut and keep relese down. Observe the metal bar of opening curtain that shall be 2-3mm behind the edge of the frame. Checking the brake for closing curtain is not so trivial, remove lens, set speed to 1/1000, open back door. release and observe if you can notice the white stripe on the left edge of the frame. Another, better method required to hearing and some experince what is the sound when the second curtain is closing.
