colonel Posted November 1, 2024 Share #1 Â Posted November 1, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I have been hovering here for sometime, deciding on an M11. The "later then usual" software fixes for Leica's new model have delayed my decision somewhat. Just wondering whether, at this time, which one to go for. On paper I want a M11, particularly the weight, quietness and sensor and no battery source issue! On the other hand the M10R is a somewhat known quantity and the resolution difference is not earth shattering. Perhaps someone who has used both ? Many thanks

I am just talking about buying another camera for my collection, but this is for ahigh res digital M. I did have a M10-R briefly but sold it along time ago .... Many thanks You’ll get some pretty frosty replies on here it seems, which is a real shame as the forum is a great resource.  Haven’t used the M10-R but I was having the exact same dilemma for quite a while, and did extensive research here and everywhere.  There were a few things which steered me to an M11, despite knowing there are potentially some shortcomings (although seemingly now many are fixed unless you’re unlucky perhaps).  A few of the main factors were: - Price. An M10-R isn’t that much cheaper than an M11. Obviously the  M11 has a bit of a bad reputation now which is no doubt part of it. Also many seem to prefer the more classic styling and metering of the 10.  - Support. A few used dealers said that Leica don’t support their older digital models for very long (relative to film) because the parts go out of supply. Apparently some just before the 10 already can’t be fixed. So for either keeping or resale it’s a big factor in depreciation and more recent makes sense.  - USB. I travel a lot and this was quite a good feature for charging (but also connectivity if needed).  I generally prefer newer technology anyway but in this case even though I’ve read much to dissuade from the 11, it seemed to make more sense for me. It’s my first Leica though so honestly I think I would have got the same experience from  both and if there would have been a well priced 10-R I would probably have bought it.  So in fact, I haven’t helped you at all, sorry. Don’t rush, quite a few do appear in various places over the space of a month so I’d find all the places you can buy them and keep checking for the right one - right condition/price. Also beware there are a hell of a lot of dodgy listings on places like eBay - probably more than ten in the space I was looking - very cheap but you won’t be getting your camera because it doesn’t exist. Shops are a big benefit there but you do pay a fair markup.  It will be a while before I know how lucky I was in my game of M11 roulette 😂 Edited November 1, 2024 by Velo-city

Velo-city Posted November 1, 2024 Share #7  Posted November 1, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was told 8-10 yrs max for a digital for guaranteed support, but there’s probably some sales incentivization in there. I ruled out the 10 because 2017 was a good few years ago.

Photoworks Posted November 1, 2024 Share #9 Â Posted November 1, 2024 I have used both. I am now in with M11 all the way. But I use the camera to make photos, and not to collect cameras. The M10-R feels like a clunky older camera. 1

SJH Posted November 4, 2024 Share #13  Posted November 4, 2024 I agree both are great but I don't miss my M10R BP & M10M at all now that I have the M11P and M11M, they're just so much better in a number of areas and the 10 series feels dated. Of course 10's can still take really great shots but I think most people haven't experienced freezing with the 11 to any great extent if at all (and for the small minority that did it's largely fixed now). I thought I might miss the bottom plate thing but I don't and the battery life is so much better plus USB-C charging. Menu's are in line with the current SL and Q's, plus you have the option to choose file sizes, 3 crop settings, the Visoflex is so much better for anything under 28mm or with a wide aperture and I find myself not having to take as many lenses with me as it's 60mb - given the crop settings e.g. a 28mm can be 36mm (1.3 & 39mb) and 50mm (1.8 & 18mb). File transfer to the FOTOS app is faster and more reliable (not as fast though as the SL3 and Q3). I also really like the internal storage approach so that you have a back up now as opposed to a single SD card. They are both great camera's, I think it just depends on all the things that have been added to the M11 series and how important they are to you. For example if the only aspect is battery life then you can just purchase an extra one for the M10R.
