Has anyone got a B W pro filter they can measure are they 1.2 mm or less?

The thinnest B+W filter is 3.3mm, far from the 1.2mm. In fact the market standard for thin filters is 3.3mm. Next best is perhaps is Sirui at 2mm, but that does not help.

Correct. I was surprised!Β

It needs the hood modified with the 1.2mm eins filter.

That's a big shame. I ordered some from Japan to try but I guess that's the end of that! I don't really use the hood so all is not lost, just that it be nice to have the option to do so from time to time.

Let me preface this with I'm a full time product designer for the past 20 years. Also a tinkerer who overthinks shit. Probably partially insane.
Β
SoΒ l'm going on a 2 week motorcycle camping trip through Patagonia. My Q3 43 is the only camera I'm bringing. And I'm not running my new Q3 43 without a filter. Or without a hood. Not happening.
Β
First, the 1.2mm thick eins Japan filter makes this whole thing possible. But it still requires more. So with 4 minor interior cuts to the hood with a mill end, I made it work. Figured worst case, only the hood would be sacrificed and absolutely zero damage to the camera (kept in another room).
Can always get another hood if it screwed up somehow.
Anyway.
Measure seven times. Cut once.
All that stuff.
Β
Zero visual difference from the exterior.
Zero effect to the structural integrity.
Β
Now it works like it was supposed to from Leica.

This fixes one problem - using a clear/UV filter.Β  It still doesn't correct the fact that a ND, mist, etc. can't be used with the hood.Β

Shooting at f/2 in bright light is a concern.Β  With the SL3 there is rolling shutter using the electronic shutter, even with slowly moving subjects.Β  The SL3 mechanical shutter goes to 1/8000 and I still sometimes need to use a 2 stop ND when using a f/1.4 lens wide open in bright light.Β  With a maximum mechanical shutter speed of 1/2000 there will be times a ND filter will be needed for regular shooting, the same as I sometimes used on the Q3 28.Β  Leica needs to come up with a fix for this that somehow keeps the original hood design, which I feel provides far more protection and shading than the round hood.

I already owned the optional Leica ventilated hood for the Q. With this hood installed, any filter can be used as the hood design allows for the filter to clear the internal opening as seen in the photo. This filter is Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter and is not low profile.

Hoag came out with a Q3-43 hood that clears filters!

Β

If you read around the forum you'll see this happened months ago. I ordered mine in mid-November, and certainly wasn't the first.

It works well, is made well and looks just like the original but a few mm longer.

Finally a filter that works with the original hood in macro mode. Not easy to find outside China commerce platforms, but I managed to get this NISI one specially made for the Q343.Β

I have found this video where the guy comes up with a solution:

But Nisi have one too, so no need to dig and try to find what this guy is usingΒ πŸ˜…

Is that a step down ring from 49 to 46? I can find a Nisi step up ring from 46 to 49, but not the other way around... I'm certainly missing something here.Β πŸ˜…

That is a specially custom made step-down ring. NISI's solution is an actual filter (no step-down ring necessary) that clears the hood even in macro mode.

TBH. Screwing filters on and off all the time would interfere with the flow of my photography. Anyway , get three screw-in round hoods from Amazon for your filters and leave them on there.Β
