helged Posted October 7, 2024 Share #182 Posted October 7, 2024 Re handgrip with Arca-Swiss plate, I use IDSWorks on Q3 28. Nice fit, low weight, working fine (for me/ my hand): https://idsworks.store/a/p/products/idsworks-modular-grip-for-leica-q3

Unfortunately I am working away from home for the next couple of weeks so have no access to my camera. I will send an update when I get back though. I have to say that I didn’t notice an issue when I tried it but you now have me wondering!

No issues with finding the shutter button or using the thumbwheel. I still may return it, though. I also use a thumb grip and may want to make the Q3 43 my main event camera, which means I need to use a flash transmitter. So, even though it's a bit expensive, I'll probably grab the Helium grip when the next round of orders open in order to free up the hot shoe and still have a thumb support.

Internal storage, especially if of good quality, is actually less prone to corruption compared to external sources. The deterioration problems you mention is mostly a thing of the past. Deterioration can occur if a SSD is full over 90% of capacity and operated in that state for a prolonged period of time, meaning months, which is not the use case for photographers I think. I suspect the reason why only the M11 has SSD is because the M doesn’t record video. A SSD is a source of heat you need to dissipate, add video recording at the same time and you have a recipe for an overheating camera. The small form factor of the Q doesn’t facilitate dissipation either. Imho the best of both worlds is internal storage + 1 card slot. The DJI drones marked *cine* have SSD storage built in and they are the *most* video capable of their line (they come with aa ProRes licence etc.). Removable for the Inspire 3 and fixed for the Mavic. SO I don't think video is the limitation. I suspect it's a purely financial decision. It costs more to design and implement internal storage. I absolutely agree that 1x external and 1 x internal is the way to go. I love this on my M's. The X2D has the best internal SSD (likely sourced from financial partner DJI) as it's stupidly fast. The first camera I know of the had internal storage was the Leica T. Again, ahead of it's time. Shame they killed it. Gordon

Financial cost is definitely one of the factors. After all, it's Leica, a company that sells you a lens cap for 45€. But my point is that overheating is a thing, and heat dissipation is necessary, and the Q body doesn't look to be designed around this issue.

Do you think a SSD would generate more heat than a SD card? I don't actually know but I would have thought they're about the same. Unlike a spinning drive. Tseg Posted October 8, 2024 Share #189 Posted October 8, 2024 (edited) Good news / bad news for me. For over a decade, my primary camera has been a Sony RX1 (35mm fixed FF). I very much enjoy the fixed frame simplicity/complexity. It does wonders for controlling GAS and keeping my bag light. As I approach retirement, I decided to jump back into seeing what tech developments surround fixed lens cameras. The good news: I discovered the Leica Q3 43 and immediately knew it was the perfect compliment to my Sony RX1. This Leica really seems multi-dimensional, and I could see, moving forward, where an aspiring photo hobbiest could really do a lot with the Q3 24 and Q3 43 combo as their only cameras. The bad news: I discovered this camera only days after launch and it is already sold out everywhere, and I imagine, like the prior Q3 launch, it may be months until I see my order show up. For better or worse, I'm not so desperate to get my hands on this camera to use obscure and/or far away sources to procure this camera. For now, I'm willing to be patient. I guess I will live vicariously through others for the time being, likely researching and rounding out the appropriate ancillaries in advance of receiving the camera. Carry on. Gordon I believe that CFE cards and SSD can get much hotter than SD cards because they transfer data at much higher speed.

Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 reasons why a SSD would generate more heat: 1- higher transfer speed = more heat, as per SrMi comment above 2- For obvious reasons, the SD card slot is positioned near an opening on the body, which helps air circulation and heat dissipation 3- The general combo is SSD + SD card, so you're adding a SSD on top of a SD card
ewelch Posted October 9, 2024 Share #193 Posted October 9, 2024 Just decided to get back into Leica since I retired. So I put up all my Canon gear for sale at Fred Miranda. And then I got lucky yesterday and called the Leica store in LA and he had just sold his last Q3 43 that he had from his first allotment of 75. But then 20 minutes later he called me back and said a customer flaked out on him and I bought it! It's arriving today! So excited to have a Leica in my hands again! I shot with them professionally for 21 years, but had to go Canon when I needed digital and AF.

My sales rep said they held a bunch of the initial inventory for people who end up changing their mind/not picking up.
Stalkdog Posted October 15, 2024 Share #200 Posted October 15, 2024 Got mine today after a year with the OG Q3. Haven't seen anyone talking about it... but it feels quite a bit smaller in the hand than the 28mm. It's probably just the hood being a few millimetres shorter, but in the hand the difference surprised me. Oberwerth half case fits perfectly as you'd expect, and I'm loving the output so far. Close to 50mm is always a little bit more comfortable for what I like to photograph. Feels like a bit of relief after the "stress" of trying to adapt my style.
