M11-D Charger

This is just venting on my part.

I paid $10,200 (after tax) for an M11-D. The camera includes no battery charger in the box (unlike the M11). We are expected to either charge the battery in-camera with the supplied USB cable or spend $180+tax for an "optional" battery charger.

Seriously, though, who thought this was a good idea?

The Leica battery charger uses a USB-C connector. Leave the cable and brick out of the box. Do include the custom battery charger though.

Exacltly. The charging port (no more proprietary ports) and the charger-adapter. If one buy the separate charger from Leica you get all this:

While I wanted to get only this. And this part of the "charger" Leica perfectly well could have included. The issue is with the adapter part which in the past you would get with everything you bought.

BTW the same applies for the Leica SL3. The SL2 had an integrated adapter and battery holding unit. The adapter part is generic. The battery part is proprietary because of the battery characteristics. That part is still fine to deliver with the product. It is just a cost saving measure from Leica. But very frustrating.

BTW, you can order the M11 battery holding unit as a replacement part from your favourite Leica dealer so you don't get all the rubbish which the EU wants to eradicate. You won't find that on the websites of shops.

I think I misunderstood what you meant then, but especially with your included photos it really clarified it. I also appreciate your tip of the replacement tip route because indeed you don't need all the other stuff.

I don't know. I ordered what I thought was just the charging base. The info the Leica websites are quite poor:

But that contains all the other stuff too. Which (for me) is really useless and exactly what the EU law was there to prevent. I paid € 150 in The Netherlands.

The exist for other brands, but you probably loose some capacity.

I called my Leica store where I ordered the camera and they said that you order just the charging base directly from Leica's parts department. It's supposedly $150 (I presume plus shipping) so no great saving over $180 for the whole kit (which is shipped free from B&H).

The sort of thing to negotiate at the point of purchase rather than after!

I actually thought that the EU said the just the part that you put into the wall socket (charging unit) was forbidden plus the cable must have an USB-C on both sides. That makes fully sense as from my dozens of iPhones (or whatever) I own dozens of charging units with different cables. That has come to an end. 

When I look at the parts that belong to my M11 charging unit then I got (1) the part for the wall socket (which is forbidden todays). This one has a USB-A socket (which is forbidden as well). Then I got (2) the actual cable with USB-A for the side of the charging unit and on the other side there is a USB-C part that goes into (3) the part that I put my battery in.

The EU does not forbide that latter part (3) that is not a charging units with all its electronics inside. This unit (3) is Leica specific whereas the USB-C cable olus charging unit are general use . . .

I conclude that Leica could easily sell the camera and include just that part to put the battery in but leave out the actual charger. The actual charger we all have at home already but not that specific Leica battery unit.

The argument that we could easily charge the battery via the cable directly in the camera is not valid in my eyes as during the charging process I cannot use my camera. Then I cannot charge 2 or 3 batteries while using the camera.

Is this correct? Or did I fully misunderstand?

This is all general stuff in that box. And it should indeed be forbidden as in every household we have these thing already. Plus most photographers attach the cable to the PC/Mac and there is no nee for the charger anyway. But of course there is the need for the specific Leica battery unit: Of these 5 parts in the box we actually need nothing else than one part. And that plastic part to put the battery in should be part of the camera at no additional cost.

You could ask yourself the question why an M11 or the Q have all different batteries. This is maybe just a money making thing

A slight tangent, but does anyone here use a Power Bank to top-up / charge a M11-D whilst away from a power source, and if so any recommendations as to what works well? And what specs/output is needed from a Power Bank to charge a M11?...............Thanks!
