Can I transfer my Q3 photos directly to my iMac

bypassing the Leica Fotos app

So I cannot simply connect a usb c wire from camera to my iMac ? Like I do with my Nikon.

I will need a card reader to bypass the Fotos app to go right into Lightroom on my mac

Thank You

Well, there is nothing wrong with a card reader.

This is not always possible. The Leica Q3 28/43 has a cover for the SD card slot that is often blocked by additional accessories. For example, I have a small plate for the Peak Design Capture Clip screwed to the bottom. In order not to unscrew the plate every time, I have to use a cable. The speed when transferring to a Mac via a very good cable, unfortunately, averages 110-115 Mb/s. A good card reader gives a speed of 280-290 Mb/s.

I have no issue unscrewing the handgrip to retrieve the memory card. I use the same approach you would use with film: change cards when you have a quiet moment between shooting. I only ever review shots taken when I put the card into the computer, and at the same time charge up the used battery if needed.

It depends on the type of screw. If you need a separate tool to unscrew it, it's a pain. In my case it is like this.

That's why I inserted a 256 Mb memory card and never take it out.

This is the way I prefer to carry any of my cameras, but I'm too lazy to remove and install this plate every time.

It's still easier and safer to take the card out of the camera and put it directly into your computer or into a card reader connected to the computer. Undoing a base plate of grip takes seconds. Connecting to Wi-Fi takes longer and is more prone to disconnects etc.

Not sure why this is being made so complicated. From the pictures you will see that if the camera is connected to the iMac and set to USB mass storage, pic 1 then the Q3 shows as a device in the photos app, pic 2 then import as normal.

Yes. This is correct. Very simple to transfer using a USB-C cable. I also use the bottom plate to connect to a PD capture clip - this covers the SD card slot.

Just set up camera to default to "USB-C mass storage device." Connect to computer powered on, and Mac will recognize as a source for import. Easy (and fast) to import to Lightroom directly. I don't recall for sure, but I seem to remember that the same works for mobile workflows to Lightroom on iPad.
