Just when one should be excited about acquiring a new camera Leica has disappointed

So one gets the new M11D. Then with complete surprise one finds that the only way to format an SD card or the internal memory Leica says go do it on your PC. What!
Yes, that is true. There was no provision for formatting any memory on the M11D even through the Foto app. How could even the beta testers let this pass? Heck, with all the other M11 variants one can format both memories (SD card and internal) with a menu selection. How could I even imagine that Leica who wants to keep things simple with the M11D has just done the opposite by complicating a simple task of formatting memory.
How do I feel? Let down by Leica just when there should be a positive moment.

That's always been the case with D versions, hasn't it? There's no need to buy a camera that forces you to do things you don't like. I'm joking, but I find it so bizarre to have to use a smartphone with a camera for the pleasure of being deprived of basic functions that I suppose you should thank Leica for making you suffer a little more 😄

Since the SD card malarkey with the M9, I have always used SD formatter to format my SD cards.  We were told NEVER to format in camera.  Now, I appreciate that advice has changed over the years, but the practice has stuck with me.  If you have your M11 or M11-D attached to your computer by USB-C cable, can you format the internal memory and SD card from your computer?  What options with Fotos?  Seems like a storm in a tea-cup to me, but then with the M10-D I remove my SD cards (when I remember how an M10-D works - mine is still somewhere between Wetzlar customer services, Leica’s shipping agent, Leica NZ and me).

No, unfortunately that is not possible. One of the M11's birth defects is that its memory (IN and SD) was not programmed as mass storage and is therefore not recognised as such by the computer (at least not by the Mac). Image transfer is only possible via ptb. You need a suitable programme for this (Lightroom is one such programme). Deleting via ptp is not possible as far as I know, but I have never tried it. A programme called MacDroid was mentioned above that is supposed to do all this. Otherwise, the only other options are formatting in the computer (SD Formatter APP) or deleting via the Leica app.

So, ok.......This question.

If you connect a M11-D to your Mac with the supplied ( ? ) USB-C to USB 3 cable can you then format or delete all images?

If so, that would work for me.

I don't have my camera with me right now to confirm, but I am pretty confident you can delete using the "Image Capture" program that is included with every Mac.

Hmmm...thanks.

I no longer own or use an iPhone so I'd like to know just how much this will effect my use of this camera, ( I have a "trial" one arriving later this week ), I do not want to have to dip back into the smart 'phone swamp just to be able to run this camera. With the m10-D it was simple enough, remove the SD card plug it into the Mac, download and re-format using SD Card Formatter, replace into the camera and you were away.............Now with the M11-D things may not be that simple, the SD card procedure should be the same but there's the internal memory to download from and clean off too and I am unclear how to do that.

I do have an iPad mini but as sure as hell I don't want to have to port that around with me when I'm out with the camera just to download to or change settings, that would be more than stupid.

To be fair to Leica, regardless of the logic of the construction, a fair number of LUF friends remain keen to try out this combination or at least happily coexist; customers getting this M11-D testifies to that

No, Image Capture only sees the SD card.

He cannot therefore access the internal memory.

I have just tested this and you are incorrect (assuming it's the same on the 11-D as the 11-P). Image Capture sees the photos on internal memory too, I just made a test photo without an SD card in my M11-P and both DNG and JPEG were visible to download and delete.

I wasn't making fun of Leica, but there's a bit of masochism in this D cameras thing, and the idea of suffering a little more should be welcomed by those concerned. Just kidding again 😉 BTW all my SD cards are formatted with SD card Formatter so suffering is part of my daily life 😅
