Dancogan Posted September 13, 2024 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will apologize in advance for what may be a pretty dumb question: I came home yesterday with my new Q3. I unscrewed the lens cap and noticed that the lens hood (shade) was inside the hood. But I don't know how to separate the two. The lens hood does not appear to be free to rotate or unscrew, unless it was put in there with an impact wrench! Any help will be appreciated. Thank you! Roy88 Posted September 13, 2024 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2024 The lens cap is really tight on the Q3 lens hood. I did the same thing and found it was easiest to screw the lens hood back on and then worked on the hood to get it off. Since replaced both with the JJC round vented hood and 49mm lens cap. MikeD70 Posted September 14, 2024 Share #3 Posted September 14, 2024 It's a friction seal, you really couldn't pull the round lens cap off the lens? Try this, maybe it'll work out better for you. LesR Posted September 14, 2024 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2024 The lens cap does not unscrew, it pulls off. You have just unscrewed the lens hood and cap in one. All you need to do is screw it back on and just pull the lens cap off.
stuny Posted September 14, 2024 Share #5 Posted September 14, 2024 Before long the lens cap will loosen. All Leica lenses that use friction to hold the lens cap in place eventually fail, and if you're lucky, you'll hear it hit pavement when it does. Dr. G Posted September 14, 2024 Share #6 Posted September 14, 2024 I had the same issue when I first got my Q3. Initially, try to rotate the lens cap clockwise. Because the hood has a hard stop you can get the cap off this way. If you try to loosen the lens cap counterclockwise the hood will unscrew. The cap is really tight when you first get the camera and it will seem like it won’t come off. Even after it loosens up I always found that twisting it clockwise while removing it was easier. But the sound rendering, with its colorful peels, is like no other. As with all things Leica the sound of the lens cap hitting the pavement is unique…
David Wien Posted September 14, 2024 Share #8 Posted September 14, 2024 I use the Otect cap. It looks similar to the one in the photo above, but without printing on the outside. David
Dancogan Posted September 14, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted September 14, 2024 (edited) Many thanks to all who responded. "Time heals all" seems to hold true for separating the lens cap from the lens hood. After shooting at the local famers' market today I was simply able to pull off the lens cap, leaving the hood in place, once I got home. Don't know what helped it loosen up - maybe just the warmth of the sun. Thank you all, again! Edited September 14, 2024 by Dancogan
