Leica + Currency

I'm an RF beginner, I love my Leica more and more each day, I was in about to buy a new Leica 75mm f/2 Summicron APO end of this year. In early december I asked my local store how much is the price, it was around USD 2.950 (in my country currency). Then the owner suggest me to buy it immediately, don't wait until 2008 because all the Leica price are going to be increasing after the New Year.

Ok, I don't if it true or false but I believe that, I won't buy it next year but not at that time either, this weekend is the time. I was so excited when I asked the availability of the lens this morning, I was shocked! Not because it's already taken but because the price is now USD 3.150 (in my country currency). + USD 200 in 2 weeks? Why?

Not because Leica has updating the price BUT our currency is weaken against EURO. It's really disadvantage to life in a Country which doesn't have a strong currency. First, Leica policy to raise the price next year, Then I don't know what's going to happen next year with EURO. I think they will keep going strong.

Let's say if Leica is upgrading their price around 5% next year, that would become 15-20% in my country. Lucky if you life in Europe, and I think Americans will having this problem as well next year, but US is a strong country, should be recovering soon. My country is different story. Well, even if I received a double burden but I will still be buying the Leica, I realize that every Hobby are always expensive anyway. :D

Since you appear to be based in Jakarta, Hongkong is not that far and is a very good place to buy Leica equipment. Usually much cheaper than elsewhere.

Andy

That's true Andy, Hongkong is great for shopping indeed. Every time I have chance to go to Hongkong, I spend quite huge. Last time I went there I bought some lenses (SLR). Unfortunately I rarely go there, and if I dedicate the trip just for buying lens, I think the equipment + flight ticket is still more costly than buying the equipment itself here. But many thanks, I agree with your point. Do you know any good Leica store there?

Peter,

That's exactly what I was trying to say, buying Leica (especially the glass) here, just like investing money in EURO base, which I also have done it in 'real' EURO currency.

No stock in Hong Kong. I bought it online with Adorama (back order), and for the moment BnH has stock @2795USD, plus shipping cost 60USD to Hong Kong and about 100USD to Indonesea.

Really? I went to Singapore this November and no stock either, they have 50's and 35's but no 75's.

I've never bought any equipment from internet, besides books from Amazon, B&H and Adorama seems worth to try. I wonder if they could ship door to door, because I have to go to post office to collect my books from Amazon. For books it's fine, but for lens or camera it's too risky. Thanks Claude.

Yes, the low Dollar makes things different. It Leica was an american company us outside US could really buy a lot of lenses these for low prices these days.

One should remember it's not a natural catastrophe but man made. A result of policy and let's hope policy changes with a new president.

Else you might consider a revolution ;-)

We're so used to "stuff" coming down in price that it goes against the grain to see Leica increasing their prices every 1 January and often in between as well.

Partly to do with exchange rates, partly raw material costs, partly inflation, partly Leica pricing on the basis of value delivered, not cost incurred.

The message is clear. If you want something Leica, buy it sooner rather than later because "later" will be more expensive.

Sure, from door to door, and you can track the shipment from airport to airport, and even you know when you can expect the local UPS staff knocking your door. And on the contrary, UPS and Fedex cannot deliver items to PO Box.

Mas Ariston, apakah kamu sudah coba bayar Leica di Kuala Lumpur? Ada distributor di sana tetapi tidak ada di Indonesia. May be less expensive that way and currency exchange tidak sama. Just a thought...

Cheers,

  • 2 weeks later...

mgcd, I've been to KL, maybe I don't know any good store there but IMHO Singapore & Hong Kong (or Japan) are far better country for getting Leica, I even prefer to buy in Indonesia for photography equipment than in Malaysia. Btw, Nice to meet you, apa kabar Medan? :)

I was out of town for a week, the good news (at least for me) is I bought my 75 Cron before the trip :D I love it, Great piece of glass in a compact size... and I like the 35 + 75 combo..
