The S9 was never a camera I really considered.  No mechanical shutter, no EVF, etc.  With the possibility of a Q with a 43mm lens on the horizon I’ve been thinking differently about the S9.  The majority of my images are taken in the 35-50mm range.  I’ve had almost every iteration of the Q and always found the 28mm lens tough to work with - either cropping to my preferred focal length or wishing it was a little wider.

I have the 21 APO SL for my SL3 and love it.  I think a 21/43 travel kit would be great, especially since the APO lenses, when I used them on the SL2-S gave me images that looked like they were taken with a much higher resolution camera.  I usually only use my wide angle for scenic shots, architecture, monuments, etc.  where an EVF (for me) isn’t as important.  I’d rather not take the SL3 if a good, smaller body is an alternative.

has anyone tried any of the APO SL lenses with the S9?  I’m thinking it could easily fit with a Q body in a relatively small bag and be a great travel/EDC kit.

Not the S9, but the Sigma fp; the lesson I learned is that I want a built in viewfinder in a stills camera. It's different with a video camera.
Apo SL lenses felt very big on it, though they performed fine.

The S9 with 2 compact Panasonic lenses is a perfect add on to a Hasselblad X2D with28mm XCD lens.

IMO, this is all you need:
low light shooting with the Panasonic 50mm f1.8;
teleshooting with the new compact Panasonic 28-200mm;
+  the XCD28p wide angle lens with the 100MP Hasselblad X2D for landscapes giving the best IQ of all.

This fits all in a medium size bag

I instead combine my X2D with an m43 or a Leica CL, as I do not enjoy shooting without an EVF.

I do not like shooting with APS-c or m43.
Returned the D-Lux8 after 1 week.
Comparing to a real (M) leica (or Hasselblad it felt like a toy.

But darn, that D-lux 8 is so portable and with great ergonomics. However, I was thinking more  of Olympus Om1.2.

I have tested D-Lux 7 vs iPhone 7 in very low light, and D-Lux 7 is much better (after post).

There are situations where iPhone’s IQ is close, especially when viewed on small screen and the light is good. There are situations where iPhone’s IQ is sufficient.

I use the S9 as a temporary substitute for my CL camera that I sold some time ago in the hope for a compact SL camera.

I use the S9 with the 20-60 Panasonic full frame lens for most of my pictures and when I need a tele with the TL 55-135 or 35 and 60 prime lenses. Image quality even cropped is very good and the camera-lens system is still quite compact and light.
I definitely miss the viewfinder. Image stabilization and noise control at high ISO are making me want to keep the camera as long as I don’t find a better and compact solution.

I bought an S9 out of pure curiosity and because of the form factor. I really love it as an everyday camera. I use it with the SL 35/2 Summicron or the lightweight Lumix 24/1.8 and 50/1.8.

The AF tracking with continuous shooting is way better than the one on my SL2-S. I enjoy the real time LUTs and can use the in camera JPEGs right away pretty often this way.

The only thing I wished would be, that the screen should habe been a tilt screen instead of a flip out screen, so the form factor would stay as small as possible when shooting low or high angles.

In the Sigma BF thread someone wanted a comparison with this camera... it's the first thing I jumped to as there are a lot of similar features, but I think the Sigma will take the prize when it comes to menu.

I have never touched a panasonic camera, but reading on the forum in general I get the feeling they are not great.

Can anyone comment on the S9 menu vs say newer sony menus vs leica...

Also anyone have experience with this camera and Sigma iseries primes (I assume they would be fine, just have not seen comments on these yet in this thread).

I had the S5II X, and I sold it as I've never got used to the ergonomics, button layout and the endless menus. Its the reason I skipped the S9.

Will Leica perhaps have its own "S9" (QL?) in the future?

The price for the S9 dropped below 1000€, so it becomes interesting as back up body with little weight. Here is the compatibility to none L-lenses:

  • M-lenses with Leica adaptor
Focal length to be selected manually
Magnification to focus directly accessible with rear wheel.
Corner performance with 2.8/28mm ist okay

  • Canon EF lenses via MC21
    Very fast AFS

  • Leica S-lenses
Manual focus only, but control of aperture possible

Nice combo with Sigma I-lenses, if weight and size is an issue.
Good back up if main body fails

iPhones must be awesome now, because nothing that I've seen from an iPhone comes close to a good photo taken with a micro four thirds camera.

As for the S9, I'm considering one as a daily carry camera, because I have to admit that the SL2S get a bit heavy sometimes. I would use M lenses like the Summicron 50 and Voigtlander Nokton 35/1.4, and lightweight L mount lenses like the 20-60, 50/1.8 and 35 SL. The S9 will likely work decently with the Summicron 50 as it works fine on the S5 and S1, which I also have.

On this, L mount seriously needs to make something small compact but with an evf, hotshoe and decent ergonomics out of the box...

Frustrating to see most L mount products these days being re-casing the other L mount manufacturers products....
