Can't decide, please help

Hi,

I'm up for a MP and went to my local Leica Store in Heidelberg today. I never thought about buying a silver M, my M-A and Monochrom is black and I love it.

Then the guy showed me a silver MP and I was kind of flashed, didn't expect this. So I'm in a real dilemma (a nice one, I know). 

So now what? Silver or black? Forgive me, I know this question has been asked a thousand times but not on Aug, 31st 2024 🫣

Oh and I own the Summilux-M 35/1.4 Steel Rim, which looked really cool on the silver MP.  

Thoughts ladies and gents? I'm kind of lost at the moment.

Silver MP is just soooo beautiful and will match your silver lens.

You're right it's been asked a thousand times including last week. Buy whatever makes you smile not what someone on an internet message board thinks you should buy!

Seriously. If it were a performance issue I could understand the question but this is a cosmetic/aesthetic question that only you can answer.

I've always preferred chrome Leicas - but my history goes back into the 1950s when chrome was a sign of quality and class. I did opt for black chrome in 1985 on my M6 (Which is still pristine) and on M5 I think black looks better, but my last M purchase was a chrome M7, when I had a choice between chrome & black at the same price.

In the late 1960s it seemed like chrome bodies and black lenses were the most common combination. That's when I bought my chrome M4 and black 35, 50, & 90 lenses.

I appreciate the simplicity of the silver MP top plate, and were I to get an MP it would be silver.

I like variety, so now that you already have two black Leica M, the MP must be silver. My MP is silver (but if I could have black paint, I would grab it ….. and have both ).

Seriously, a silver MP is just beautiful. It will look like an old camera to most people so thieves are less interested (ironically). Regardless, who cares?  If you like how it makes you feel when you look at it and hold it, then it’s the right choice.

A silver MP is like a giraffe, great to look at but I wouldn't want to own one.

As for silver being a thief magnet I think even they would think 'poor sod still having to use an old camera, ah, there's a Sony over there..' Even with a black paint MP I get far more 'can you still buy film for those?' than anybody interested in the brand.

Especially if the black paint is badly worn and scratched so that you can see the brass. A camera like this can't be worth anything...

Stay away from Leica, Black or Silver. Leica now have big problems in customer care and repair. Leica will take your money but when things go wrong, boy you are in deep s... and I should know!

I shoot all day at work with one of the ugliest cameras ever, I don’t mind my playtime camera being a pretty little thing at all.

I totally get asking the question, it’s like flipping a coin. You don’t always know which way you want it to land till the moment it’s in the air.

Spontaneous enthusiasm can turn to boredom quickly. Stay at black. 

Or you wait a couple of days, weeks, months ... Take looks at the silver again and again and check if you still like it.

Interesting answers all, thanks a ton, decided to let it sink in for a week or two. 

I don't buy into the 'shiny' or 'safety' thing though, a black M doesn't make one invisible.

I see no recognisable difference in people reactions when walking around with my silver Nikon FM3a, compared to the black M-A.

Anyway, will let you know soon in the 'I love my  MP' thread.

just FYI, went to the store today and got back home....

...the black MP 🤷‍♂️

The initial fascination with chrome didn't last for too long. Happy now, loaded SilberSalz35 500T and will go out in a bit.

Black Paint. I know it is a bit glossy and I like the black chrome of my M-A more but that's what it is.
