My Godson is going off travelling (again) and has asked me for some ideas for a new digital camera/system to take.

He loves using film but the practicalities of using digital obviously appeal. I'm using ancient Canon DSLR's with my Leica lenses (mostly a film user) so am not up to speed with the latest digital options.

I'm thinking one of the mirrorless system cameras and as he has a few OM lenses one that he can use those with too. Budget will be a factor, I think around £1000 total for a camera/lens etc. A standard zoom will probably be fine, maybe with an ultra wide (one of the newer less costly options perhaps).

Used is also an option.

TIA

I use the Sony 6500 with Leica M and LTM, Canon EF with AF. That is an APS-C camera, but the full frames should be OK too.  Don't worry too much!

And, if it has to be small the Sony QX1, either with iPhone or - if it has to be small in the theater - with Leica viewfinder.

Panasonic version of the Leica D-Lux 8.  If he shoots highest quality jpeg files the built-in 25-75 mm zoom can expand on the long end to 150 mm using their iZoom function, a virtually lossless algorithm to handle the chore.

Olympus OMD-EM5ii (used), about <£500, plus a suitable Olympus or Panasonic MFT lens. Any of the other Olympus MFT bodies (e.g. EM1) would probably work, but the EM5ii is one I used to have. MFT systems are small, jewel-like and make good images - not as good as a Leica CL at APS-C, but still nice. There is a good choice of OM, Lana and other lenses.

The GX80/85 pairs especially well with the 9,15 and 25mm Summilux lenses.  Leica CL dimensions, IBIS and not too large a 4k crop give this camera a leg up on many other options.

The newer G100D is smaller, with the same EVF as the D-Lux8, and a flip screen for video/selfies, but has poorer ergonomics and a heavy crop for electronic only video stabilisation.
