Anyone have a suggestion for a readily available filter that will fit under the Leica automatic lens cap? I bought a B+W 007 master thinking it'd be thin enough but clearly not... I have seen recommendations for the Cokin and eins super protect filter but doesn't seem like these are available anymore...

For reference the B+W filter pictured only protrudes ~3.3mm and it's too thick...

Thanks!

You don’t really need the lens cap with a filter. Just use the standard lens cap on the filter when you have to put the camera to bed at night

I agree.

JJC lenscap does accept filters.

I have the JJC cap and in my opinion the overall aesthetics of the Leica is marred by the extra protrusions on the JJC. I had the same response from Leica -  auto lens cap or UV filter. I now just use the Leica auto lens cap - happy days.

As a FYI for people I bought this filter and it "kind of" works... it's just a hair too thick so when the auto lens cap is screwed on it rubs just a bit... I paid ~$10 for it so I think I'll use this for now until I can find something else.

Also, thanks for the other suggestions and I know I could get a JJC cap or just use the filter + normal cap but the JJC cap is aesthetically unappealing to me and I don't want to use just the filter and regular cap because it's annoying to have to remove the cap... yes I know first world problems but still... 😅 I just didn't anticipate paying $$$ for the Leica branded auto lens cap only for them not to consider that people might want to put a protection filter on their lens with it!

I got a cheap uv filter, masked the glass & filed it down to size. Finished with 5000 wet & dry & some spray paint. Lens cap & filter now work flawlessly.

I can understand if someone wants to protect their lens.
Having to replace a built-in zoom lens is different than with an M, for example, where I can first attach a different lens. If the lens on the Lux is defective, all focal lengths are defective!
I also decided on the automatic protective cover after careful consideration. Firstly because I don't use the camera all the time and I set the sleep mode to one minute and the lens then closes and is immediately protected. Always opening and closing the loose cover really bothered me. And secondly because of the length when extended, I wouldn't just carry it around unprotected in crowds. I don't know how much impact the lens mount can withstand. I think the best solution is to simply use the automatic cover because the sleep mode function always protects the lens. When in use, it is protected by my attention anyway.

As a long-term Lumix LX-series camera user (from the LX2 to the LX100 models) I remember facing this problem with a range of automatic lens caps of the type now on offer with the Leica D-Lux 8. In the end, although I did find various independent versions JJC version of the caps which acommodated filters, these tended to be clunky and poorly made, and after some useage I often found the hinged components stopped retracting properly, or springs became loose.or broke.

This outweighted any benefits so I eventually abandoned automatic caps and returned to the filter option, using a Hoya HMC UV(c) 43mm filter, which is permanently fitted to the camera. This has the additional advantage of enabling me to add a JVC LX-43LX100 lens hood to manage some lens flare in bright lights or sunshine. This combination - which I have now transferred to my newly acquired D-Lux 8 - also means that when the camera is in use, the combination of filter and lens hood keeps the lens well protected from any knocks or accidental smuears and I don't need to put the cap back on the lens while I am shooting.

I keep the cap permanently attached to the camer with the small cord provided, so it hangs free when not in use. When needed the cap fits firmly inside the lens hood without the need to remove that either. With the LX100 II I found the fit with the proprietary cap was too tight to release it easily from within the hood, so I bought a "centre squeeze" cap which did the trick. So far I'm finding the Leica cap leaves enough room to release it easily and quickly.

I hope this is helpful. Obviously my setup would not fit in a pocket or a full camera case, but with the hand grip (which I use), or a half-case, it's still a very compact and discrete unit, and still fits nicely in a small bag.

I don't like the JJC cap because it totally ruins the camera's aesthetic.

I'm using a Cokin pure harmonie filter with the auto lens cap together on my 109 and hope to transfer both to D-lux 8 if I will ever buy one.

I'm not quite sure if the filter has been discontinued though.

FWIW, I ended up getting an eins Super Protect Filter from aliexpress... Got it from the link below... Fits perfectly under the Leica Auto Lens Cap. It's showing out of stock now but maybe they'll get more...?

Hi.

By Checking the auto-lens-cap for the D-Lux 7 at a Leica-Store, I have noticed that this cap system is not a real ´lens care´ idea- it does not really protect the lens from damage or dirt. It is a ´life-style-product´.

I have purchased the Zeiss T* UV-Filter- this is the real lens protection (and the original cap).

The JJC Lens hood is also much too cumbersome - I have bought it and sold it already.

enjoy the Camera.

I currently use the Auto Lens Cap, but I am thinking of the UV Filter for additional protection. Is there a difference in image quality when it comes to UV filters? In other words, is the Leica UV Filter really worth spending ca. 150€, while I can get cheaper ones around 30-40€?
