a.noctilux Posted July 20, 2024 Share #21 Â Posted July 20, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) @Anthony MD you will see that each lens has it's own character. I don't count anymore how many lenses I own and less so 50mm lenses. In my view, each lens is something to discover in interchangeable lens system. I never yet found "universal" lens. Â Some people can live with only one lens on the M, in the past I was in that situation sometimes. Now I use one lens, the one (I know well) I choose for the planned task. 3

Excuse me but this doesn't prove there is aluminum in the rigid. I don't claim it has none, just asking but the collapsible has no aluminum AFAIK and is even lighter. I guess i should ask on the historica forum unless @a.noctilux or @adan know better than i do as often (always?) .

The Rigid and SOMNI is very different in construction. They are of same metal and same optical cell. The optical cell is interchangeable between them *. Just the SOMNI mount is heavier having the second brass ramp for close range.  * the DR(SOMNI) has always the optical cell of 51.9mm (real measured focal length) and Rigid can have this engraved "19" on the mount. lct Posted July 20, 2024 Share #32 Â Posted July 20, 2024 Aluminum was for anodized black if i recall correctly. Silver bodies and lenses were only brass in the old days. Silver aluminum must have apppeared on lenses in the nineties or something but again i may be wrong.

lct Posted July 20, 2024 Share #34  Posted July 20, 2024 Just now, Anthony MD said: The weight difference between the Rigid and DR shows different metals are used in each model…! Not that i have any clue about how those lenses are made but @a.noctilux's explanation above makes sense to me. The Rigid and the DR are not the same lenses. DR has extra metal for extended focusing which explains why it is heavier.

I hope the Rigid is brass also…!  My English is not better than @lct but I just think that you missed this in the discussion: The DR version is 88g heavier than the v2 Rigid version (without googles that weigh an extra 53g.). As @a.noctilux said, the glass inside both lenses is the same, but the DR version needs extra metal to allow the DR goggles to be mounted (goggles mount on the lens) and extra or larger inner components to make the close range work when the goggles are mounted. I own both lenses and you can easily feel the difference in weight. I never opened either of them but handling the DR makes you realize the focusing unit is almost built like 2 M lenses in one. IMO this can easily explain the extra weight of the DR because brass parts quickly add up to 88g. No worries, both the Rigid v2 and DR are made of brass 🙂 1
