PaulJohn Posted July 10, 2024 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I switch on the flash the Q3 ISO auto defaults to ISO 100. If I take the ISO setting out of auto then put it back into auto it then chooses an ISO to expose for ambient light. If I turn the camera on at f8, then ISO AUTO defaults to ISO 100 If I turn the camera on at f1.7 then ISO AUTO chooses an ISO to expose for ambient light. Shutter set at 1/125 Can someone tell me what's going on here? TIA
Advertisement Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Hi PaulJohn, Take a look here Q3 with SF40 - ISO AUTO behaviour. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
PaulJohn Posted July 26, 2024 Author Share #2 Posted July 26, 2024 I didnt get a reply to this. Maybe most people dont use flash? Anyway I'll just bump once if thats ok
Luke_Miller Posted July 26, 2024 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2024 I have no explanation for what your Q3 is doing, but auto ISO is not recommended when using flash. It sounds like the Q3 is trying to turn off auto ISO when it detects the flash, but not doing it in all circumstances. In the Nikon world the camera turns off auto ISO when a flash is detected and sets the ISO to a pre-set fixed value.
PaulJohn Posted July 26, 2024 Author Share #4 Posted July 26, 2024 Thanks Luke I can live with that. I was using Auto ISO to keep the ambient lighting well exposed in different parts of the venue.
coleica Posted July 26, 2024 Share #5 Posted July 26, 2024 When I first purchased my SF40 to compliment the Q3, I tried auto ISO. Learned not to use auto when using flash. Normally, I set the camera to ambient light, turn flash power on (manual) and set the power accordingly. Little bit of trial and error.
Luke_Miller Posted July 28, 2024 Share #6 Posted July 28, 2024 "Thanks Luke I can live with that. I was using Auto ISO to keep the ambient lighting well exposed in different parts of the venue." To get a more gradual light falloff I will typically do ceiling bounce. Takes more flash power but reduces the dark backgrounds from direct flash. thatkatmat Posted October 25, 2024 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm interested in acquiring the SF40 for my Q3. I was hoping TTL would work seamlessly. There are mixed results posted here. Besides picking an ISO manually, any other suggested methods needed? Hoping I can just pop it on and let the TTL do it's thing, don't want to mess with the manual settings, I can do that with a Godox setup.
