This morning I noticed a small black splotch on my rear display, roughly a millimeter square.  Over the course of the day it’s grown, now about a centimeter large.  It looks like a bunch of black pixels when sitting above an over exposed image, and rainbow pixels when sitting over an under exposed image.  Does anyone know what this could be?

Initially I thought it was impact damage of some sort, but I haven’t been handling it rough or had any rushed moments where it might’ve occurred, and there’s no scratch or mark on the glass itself.  The fact that it’s been changing in shape and size over the course of the day is concerning as well… which makes me worry about water damage.

Last night the camera got a few drops on the body (and I literally mean just a few- it was a light desert sprinkle and the camera was under cover for the ~15 minutes it was out of the bag).  Certainly far less water exposure than the camera has survived before, and far less than I’ve seen others’ digital M’s handle with ease.

Has anyone encountered this or know what’s going on?  I fear this means a display replacement, which is a lot to swallow for an issue that appears to have arisen out of the blue with entirely normal, if not gentle usage.

Thankfully this is just a display issue; the spot does not appear in images.  But still highly distracting when shooting/reviewing.

Ian Johnson,  First, welcome to the forum.  Second, in my decade plus use of all the digital M cameras in harsh environments, I have never seen this happen.  I am afraid the camera will need a visit to Leica for repair.  If the camera is under warranty, it might be a wash for you, unless the allegation comes back you abused the camera.  I suggest you send it in with your photographs and ask for a repair.  No need to explain the all the gory details.  Simply, the rear screen appears defective.  Leica will figure it out and replace it. If you have to pay for the repair, I would look at your home or business insurance to cover the repair cost.  Maybe others will chime in ideas.  You could try a camera reset, but I suspect this might not clear the issue.  Who knows, you might have discovered another, of many, M11 bugs.   r/ Mark

PS  Get either a Leica dealer or your dealer to send it on your behalf.

That’s what I figured.  Can’t find another instance of this happening, so a visit to Leica seems the only option.

It’s still growing.  As of this morning:

This is absolutely bizarre. Yesterday the black lines continued growing, to the point where a 1-2 pixel line extended so far as to nearly touch the right edge of the screen.  I wish I had gotten a picture but I was busy traveling and never got a chance.  It was terrible looking.

This morning, it’s completely gone. Not a trace of anything whatsoever.

I’m elated that I don’t need to send the camera in (knock on wood, I’m hoping/assuming it won’t return), but I’m also completely baffled.  What was that???

Amazing, I'd say it's moisture/fluid creeping up. But how could that be ?

That’s my theory at this point, but wouldn’t you expect it to have begun on the side and moved inward?  How could moisture get in between the layers of the display starting in the middle?

@Ian Johnson If it is condensation, you might want to try a do it yourself fix.  Get some dessicant dryer packs (see link), put the camera and the dryer packs in a gallon size ziplock plastic bag, seal it up and let it sit for 24-48 hours.  If the problem is moisture, this may resolve it.  If so, it beats sending it to Wetzlar and waiting 6-12 months, and then paying out the @$$. 😳

Good luck - I hope this will work for you.

That would have broken the cover glass.

No, not necessarily I think - some high pressure may cause leakage without cracking the panels.

Imaging grabbing the camera with your fingers on the LCD screen.
