I use cheap centre pinch lens caps on all my lenses and just keep the Leica originals in a tub with other bits and pieces. The lens caps I use only cost a couple of dollars on Ebay so it's not a big issue if I lose one whereas it is if I lose one of the metal Leica ones.

Thanks
You are right, but I have a problem with the centre pinch caps.
These caps damaged a filter and a LF lens when I used  them so I banned them.
One filterglas was pushed inside und the other 'accident' with the LF lens was
when it was stored with the front down in the bag it scratches the front lens!
This can happen because the snap in mechanism of these caps goes
inside the filter thread.
Now I only use slip on caps but in the moment the are hard to find also in the right size.
In the moment I have a ugly DIY-cap not a beauty but it works.

is your lens an Elmar-M, the last version? Does it have a lens cap with black "felt" inside? this last version of the cap is knurled inside, so it will be loose if you use a filter.

The older versions of the caps - with a red "felt" unknurled - will fit the filter  perfectly:

left new - right old cap:

My cap is the one on the right side and the lens is dated to 1960.
I think the 'felt' is simply worn out. I tryed to brusch it in shape
but it don't last. Maybe I will try to bring it back with a steam treatment.
I do this when some lightseals on my LF cameras are to much compressed.

Thanks

You might try a Kaiser push-on cap:

https://www.kaiser-fototechnik.de/en/produkte/artikel.php?document=/en/produkte/2_1_produktanzeige.asp&display=1&nr=6900

I use one from this range on an E43 Summilux (I was able to try a couple of sizes in a camera shop). Note that the diameter is the outer diameter of the lens/filter rather than the filter thread size. Various reviewers (B&H customers and the infamous Ken Rockwell) suggest 40mm is the one to get for a snug fit on an E39 lens/filter, but I haven't tried this and it may vary a bit by filter manufacturer.

I have some very thin self adhesive material with a soft surface which I use to tighten the grip of old lens caps. A very small piece in one place is all it takes to tighten the grip.

Also I have some of the Chinese copies of the classic Leica caps which fit well.

Do you use a Leica filter or is it an other brand? I noticed that when I use Leica E39 filters, the cap usually fits fine, but with B+W filters the cap does not hold in place. I think the latter filters are a tiny bit higher so the cap cannot be pushed on as far as needed.

Because of the value of these old vintage caps, I am afraid to lose or damage them while carrying the camera. I usually replace them by a cheap Chinese center pinch cap (or rather rim pinch cap). I found that 37mm caps hold fine and will never put too much pressure on the outer ring.

I know these Kaiser caps they are my caps to go.
I think they were build by Heliopan but they are not available.

As you can see the filter is a little bit smaler then the Lens.
So the cap sits not so deep on the focusring.
Thats the problem.

I see. Some of my Leica original push ons will sit tight enough, others don't.
About the pinch  caps, I understand you do not want to use them. So I respect that.
But I do not see how they can damage either glass or metal because mine are all plastic on the inside, like this or even more used the second one. Can you clarify?

I think they are still available. I can see them at amazon.de via Foto Köster, or on Foto Köster's own store. UK dealer Fotospeed also has them. For the 40mm, search for Kaiser 6940. There are also Kaiser resellers listed on their site that might be worth a try.

As written above my lens with a filter  get a hit on the front edge and the cap was pressed against the filterglas 95mm on my Shneider SA 72mm XL.
The filter is now waste.
The other accident happend to my Schneider Symmar 210mm. The lest sits upsidedown with this kind of cap in the bag
and the inner plastic was scratching on the front lens.
OK LF lenses have bigger and more arched lenses.

Here in EU I haven't find one, may be its easier to buy an other filter.
Or buy cheap centre pinch and hope nothing will happen.
