I think this is almost certainly a hardware issue. If it happens with every version of the firmware, even after full reset, every time then it’s a failed screen, failed button, crossed connection, damaged ribbon cable or some such.

Time to use your warranty.

The holiday in Wetzlar will take longer than is reasonable for such a failure.  I’d follow the advice above and insist on a replacement camera now, or a refund.  You have the rights - use them.  This is Leica’s problem, not yours.

Why should he expect a refund or a new camera that he has had almost two years? The problem started two month ago, from what I can see he has had the camera almost two years.

Australian Consumer Law is independent of the manufacturer warranty, so there is no relationship between the two. Even if the camera was two years old (I couldn’t see that mentioned - maybe missed it), ACL consumer guarantees remain in place. You wouldn’t expect a new Leica to cease functioning after only two years, would you.

In any case, this is Australian law which applies to purchases from Australian businesses. There may not be an equivalent in your country.

Is that Australian law allowing for such a replacement or refund on a 2 years old camera? Just curious.

In principle, yes. The guidance does not specify a time limit. The implication is that the product should last for a reasonable time in normal use. If it fails to do so, the consumer guarantees kick in, which can include repair within a “reasonable” timeframe, or replacement. Leica’s current repair timeframes could well be argued to be outside a reasonable timeframe, hence the replacement outcome could be triggered.

That’s my interpretation of the guidance as a non-lawyer, anyway. In the OP’s shoes, I would certainly be seeking to assert my rights under ACL.

Wow, surprised you can get some manufactures to sell there. I assume you have to show that it is not something you did to the product to cause the problem? This statement is not meant to infer anything with the OP's problem.

Yes, apparently so …

“Exceptions to guarantees

Consumer guarantees do not apply if you:

Follow the link above (I haven’t), then delight us with your legal opinion.

And yet, they do; and in Europe (in which I include Britain) and in so many other places.  How about that.

I hoped to know your legal opinion, as for giving mine, Australian law is not my competence, reason why i asked you.

I agree. Consult a lawyer if Leica does not comply satisfactorily, but I expect they will. Europe has similar “fit for purpose “ provisions. However your dealer is the first port of call.

Common misunderstanding, Auckland is in New Zealand.  Australia is about as close to me as Moscow is to you.  New Zealand and Australia are quite different countries.

Correct.   There is the North Island, the South Island and the West Island (where most Kiwis end up).........
