All I can say is I hope your source is right .  That sounds perfect - 40mm and APS-C [40MP?]

There certainly is a spot between the Q3 and DLux and I am that customer.

I also hope too. He is an influencer and one of their best customers.
He was spot on with every M lenses and SL3 release.
However he is an absolute M fan but not a compact camera one at all. So he was not really interested to dig more information. However he is sure that it looks like a smaller Q, with 40mm lens and APS-C sensor.

He also told me that M11-D will be postponed to late 2024 or early 2025.

I'm currently in the 'endless' waiting list for a Fuji X100VI. My main goal is to have it a backup or I don't want to carry my Leica Q3

I like the D-Lux 8 in the sense that dials and the menu are exactly the same as in the Q3, that is in fact the big plus, which would make it easier when I have to swap between the 2 cameras. What I don't like are the 'old' specs of the camera, starting from the senor to the lack of a tilting-screen. If at least these 2 aspects would have been addressed as well in the D-Lux 8, I would have jump immediately to this new camera.

Anyway I'll wait for the first reviews and then re-assess if I go for the D-Lux 8 instead. Meanwhile I keep my name on the waiting list for the X100VI.

I am an M fan too, but not to leave in my bag everyday, along with everything else.  Something directly competitive with the Fuji X100 would be great and will keep an eye out for more rumours.  Thanks!

If you listen to or read what Leica’s management has said, the chances of another APSC camera are zero. Much as I would like a CL2 in APSC format it’s not going to happen.

As to the question about exposure compensation, the right thumb wheel on the DL-8 works the same way it does on the Q series. You simply rotate it with your thumb to change exposure compensation. The button can be set to adjust ISO.

Considering that it will offer a user experience similar to that of the Q3, and a price that is competitive with the Fuji X100, it seems like the DLux-8 will be an excellent entry point into the Leica digital camera eco-system....a gateway drug if you will.  The zoom lens makes it considerably more versatile/useful than any of the fixed lens alternatives.

I'm very interested.

What does it mean, 21MP / 17MP effective? Why even mention 21MP if they're only using 17MP ?

They don't always use the same 17MP. The crop from the full 21 4x3 aspect sensor varies dependant on the aspect ratio selected as the lens cannot cover the full sensor.

The marketing spin for this is 'multi-aspect sensor'. See also LX100II for reviews.

21 MP > 17 MP so marketing wise it is better. 😜

The sensor has really 21MP. So it’s true even if it does use it fully.

However it is not even 17 MP.
4:3 = 16.8 MP.
3:2 = 16.2 MP.
16:9 = 15 MP.
1:1 = 12.6 MP.

Actually D-Lux 8 is the exact opposite to Q/Q2/Q3.
Due to lack of resolution D-Lux 8 requires exact framing through the zoom and choosing aspect ratio before hand.
Whereas Qs have a more relax approach : take the shot first. Then crop/reframe as desire in post process, thanks to huge amount of pixels

I had to think about this a bit but it (kinda) makes sense but it sounds like none of the possible formats results in a 21MP image. Is that correct? If so, it seems a bit dishonest to say 21MP even if the sensor is theoretically capable of outputting 21MP.

yeah but ... there is a bit of a price difference. The price and the size of the Q2/Q3 makes it not really competitive in the compact camera segment.

You and me both. 👍 Except I'm not even looking for that bargain, I'm happy with my Typ 109 and my M9s.

I confess that as much as I loved the files from the M9, I was less than thrilled with it.  The M10-P I have is what the M9 was advertised to be.  I think that the M10-P will become the M6 of digital M bodies.

To be clear D-Lux 7 offers way lower image quality than CL + 18-56mm.
So don’t be disappointed.

GR III - GR IIIx - X100V are also in another league.
D-Lux 7 is on par with 1 inch sensor compacts. Albeit with less resolution.

Used side by side. There is no competition. CL with 18-56mm output better photos : sharper details with more resolution, more dynamic range and better high ISO.

It is just for your information. I was kind of disappointed by the difference between the two cameras. Add the flawed Panasonic UI and the deal was off for the D-Lux 7.

D-Lux 8 will have Q interface and user experience. Which is excellent. However I am not sure if Leica can overcome the IQ disadvantage of a cropped m4/3 sensor at only 2.2x even with a better processing unit.

If it’s true that Panasonic will no longer produce the LXxxx camera, then Leica must have made an investment not only in continuing production, but in the re-engineering and tooling for the new “Q” style body, change to PCB’s to accommodate the new body and changes to s/w & UI. That must mean that the dl series of camera has a future, and maybe the dl 9 will be what we all hope for, but the dl 8 has to prove to be  a success first.

That could well be the case for Leica. As far as I remember, reports appeared on the Internet during the summer of 2022 that Panasonic would stop production of compact and bridge cameras. A little later, the LX100 mk II was listed on the Japanese website as completed and even later as discontinued.
