Kozonoh Posted April 29, 2024 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have noticed a strange (at least for me) thing: all settings equal, the large Jpegs at 800 iso, are much noisier even with noise correction at high level, than the raw file, straight in camera, before any correction applied in pp. It dosent matter much as I use raw but I'm a bit puzzled. Advertisement Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Hi Kozonoh, Take a look here Noisy Jpegs. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Luke_Miller Posted April 30, 2024 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2024 The jpeg images will have the Film Style settings applied while the raw files will not. What are your jpeg sharpness settings? Excessive sharpness will amplify any ISO noise.

Miltz Posted May 1, 2024 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2024 I was playing with jpegs today. Files look beautiful even in high ISO. My noise reduction is set to low.
Kozonoh Posted May 1, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted May 1, 2024 I checked again and the difference in terms of noise seems tremendous. I suppose one of my jpeg settings is wrong, but which? My L-jpeg files which should be at 60 m are only at 30 m without any cropping in camera. My Film Style settings are set to std, noise reduction high, idr off. What am I missing? wolfewithane Posted May 2, 2024 Share #6 Posted May 2, 2024 On the Q2M, I set Sharpness, Highlight and Shadow to 0 and the Contrast to -1 and am getting noticeably smoother tones.
jaapv Posted May 2, 2024 Share #7 Posted May 2, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if I am telling you what you already know, but this forum is read by photographers of all levels. Noise is mainly created by underexposure, ISO settings much less. Expose as liberally as possible. Don’t try to save all highlights, only the ones that matter in low light-high contrast situations like street shots at night. Shoot raw, not JPG as you do, it will give much better results, especially shots that need some work, if only effective noise reduction. The in-camera noise reduction is severely limited by lack of processing power.
Kozonoh Posted May 2, 2024 Author Share #8 Posted May 2, 2024 Thanks for your answer. I shoot raw, that is the point of this camera. And I like very much to spend time in pp with dxo. I was just surprised by the level of noise in the in camera jpgs if you look at them at 100%.
David Wien Posted May 2, 2024 Share #9 Posted May 2, 2024 (edited) It is difficult to discuss this problem without seeing evidence and knowing the settings that were used. I havent noticed the effect, so I suspect that you may have different settings than I have. David Edited May 2, 2024 by David Wien

David Wien Posted May 3, 2024 Share #18 Posted May 3, 2024 These are two different photos. Looking at 250% magnification, I see only dust and jpeg artifacts. Not connected, but strange that the FL is reported as 30mm, rather than 28mm. David
Kozonoh Posted May 3, 2024 Author Share #19 Posted May 3, 2024 Sure there are different, one is large Jpg the other is large raw. Taken within one minute from each other. In the in camera jpeg, artifacts and noise seem to me quite strong even at 100% only. This was the point of my original post. Not using jpegs I don't care that much but I was surprised to discover such a big difference.
David Wien Posted May 3, 2024 Share #20 Posted May 3, 2024 I still dont see noise. Try doing it at ISO 12500 and you will see some noise (which can be removed by PhotoLab, etc), but at ISO 800 my Q3 is free of noise. David
