Interesting,  my Sigma 50 1.2 eliminated the P and S Exposure mode icons on my SL3.  Leica was going to exchange the camera but now it appears the Icons reappear when the Sigma is removed.  The Sigma firmware was updated thru the USB dock UD-11 prior to installing on the SL3.   If I may ask, do you have any reduced functionality with your SL3 when using the Sigma 50 1.2 Art??      Did spend the weekend taking pics, and they are gorgeous.    Thanks guys

In the P & S-Mode the aperture ring must stand in A mode not in any f from 1.2 to 16. The camera must be able to determinate the right f-value. If the ring stands at any f-value, the camera can't change the f-value and eliminate the P &S icons. This can happen only with lenses with a aperature ring.

+1. Similarly, manual focus cannot be set on the camera (when using a Sigma lens with a MF/AF focus button); one has to set the lens to MF. This has confused me more than once since no buttons are available on eg the Leica SL Crons - implying that everything is set on the camera.

Some first impressions of the Sigma 50mm f1.2

first f1.2 vs 5.6:

Both handheld. Sharpness very good. As expected some loss of contrast at f1.2, but still very good in my opinion.

Next some pictures at f1.2, with very shallow DOF:

Thank you gentlemen,  without the lens attached, the functionality returns to the SL3, testing other lenses will tell us if the lens is possibly at fault. The Leica reps have been great troubleshooting. Thanks again

Yes, but was aperture ring was set to "A" when it failed?

Having a rather large collection of lenses, in my experience, it’s mostly the APO lenses that are mostly well corrected. I say mostly because even the APO50 and APO90 show traces of fringing. The M-50/1.4 ASPH is the exception as it doesn’t have an APO designation but is well corrected. Almost all other lenses show purple/red/green fringing, so until and unless Leica found some way of correcting the SL-50/1.4 through special glass and optical construction, the assumption is that it’s being corrected in-body. I care about the end result, so it’s ok for me.

Since the sigma does show fringing, the assumption again is that it doesn’t get the same level of in-body correction. Maybe it behaves better on L-amount sigma and Panasonic bodies?

It is very interesting that you say that.  I've always thought images made with the 35 and 75 looked slightly better to my eyes than my 50 APO but I could never figure out what it was.  Whenever I bring this up I'm told, unequivocally, that the 50 has the same image quality as the 35/75.

To avoid any confusion, I’m talking about the M Mount lenses. My M mount copies of APO 35 and 75 (2 copies) are better performing than my M APO 50 (2 copies) and 90 (3 copies)

I love them all and have no personal bias of one over another

Taken with the SL3 and Sugma 50 1.2.  Cropped from original image.  FWIW, there is no added sharpening in post with this image.

FWIW, here's a set of comparison images.  The first was a little overexposed even at 1/16,000.  I didn't have a ND that would fit the Sigma.
