Leica M10 design is already quite minimalistic, though sometimes it'd be nice to not paying attention to the presence of extra buttons and LCD screen. It's great that M10-D version exists for that purpose. How about introducing similar optional experience to the M10 cameras with screens.

This DIY 3D print project is still in progress, and here's the related article with more details and future updates.

3D models linked there are free for download and personal use.

Thanks for posting. The cover inevitably makes the camera a little thicker, but I like the idea. I don't have a 3D printer myself, but if the product became available for sale I would consider buying it.

Right, camera is becoming 0.5mm thicker.

The 3D printers these days are relatively cheap, good budget one + print plastic will cost about $250 - a fraction of lens cost, or about the price of Leica leather case.

$250 is more than I thought ...
For that money I would go for a nice leather half case with a lid on the back. Yes, it makes the camera thicker, but it feels great in hand.

I like something similar to this from Luigi

I like the ones that have a battery opening in the bottom and where the camera's base plate has to be removed. That way the camera doesn't get any taller, even with the half case on.

That won't be per individual cover. Will it?

That is what I thought too, but $250 seems to be the material cost for this cover... Maybe his prototypes and failed attempts are calculated in this?
Anyway the minimal additional size certainly is a bonus.

@yukosteel Please clarify?

I only have the Luigi cover for my M8 which is not giving access to my battery, and on the TL2 I have one that gives access to the battery but of course that one does not have a bottom plate to remove...
Both are very nice to use.

I never used  these and indeed saving some hight would help. Do you have a link to show an example?

I took is to mean that $250 was the initial cost of buying your own printer + plastic to make your own copy. Might be worth it if you have other things to produce eg lens caps…

I would think that quality 3D printers are still +1000€, but I may be wrong.
But this price mark could work if you know a guy (hobbyist) with a printer to execute it for you.

An other alternative is to find a Fab Lab in the neighborhood and do it yourself on their printers. Not sure if this is available in other countries. In Belgium some schools offer access to laser printers and 3D printers after hours. Kind of a club for all kinds of hobby users...

I thought Luigi made these too, but couldn't find it now (his website isn't the easiest to navigate 😉). But here is a similar one from Arte di mano with battery access door and optional back cover:

Thanks for the questions and feedback, I posted article late night and went to sleep, happy to answer now.

The material cost of printing protector cover is only about 7 cents ( $0.07 ) , its weight is 5g . The print time is about 13 minutes.

1kg (1000g) of PLA material spool cost is averagely $14

High quality printers may still cost about $1000, but good quality printer these days is only about $200+ with minimal effort needed for assembly and setup.

I didn't know much about 3D printers, only what my younger brother briefly explained in the past. One day purchased one of recommended budget models, and same day it arrived was able to print few models. There are tons of quick help videos on YT so learning curve is very short.

Here's more info on my 3D print setup (non-affiliated links):

Yeah, designing of 3D model takes time and it may be calculated as costly effort, though I'm doing it as a hobby and happy to share models for free.

There are tons of other free to print models many people design and share for cameras, you may be surprised how many hundreds thousands people are involving 3D printing into their routine home activities these days.

Very intersting! 👍

So far, I use this screen protector:

But as I own a 3D printer in the meantime, I should consider a solution similar to yours! Ideally with a hinge at the bottom, so that one may fold the protector down.
