Sounds like you have a defective camera. Even with the old firmware I don’t experience these types of issues and I was using an old UHS-1 card. Bring to a Leica dealer or call Leica. Something is up for sure.

Not necessarily…many of today’s high resolution cameras are card sensitive.

How is this any different than formatting in Camera?

I have no idea, but I format on the computer first and then repeat the process in the camera. It doesnt take very long, and it seems to be fool-proof.

If you format it on the computer, use SD Formatter, not OS format operation.

As an IT tech I can’t see how formatting on the computer then the camera has any benefit than just formatting in the camera.

SD Formatter offers two types of formatting, while Leica cameras provide only one.

SD Formatter fully complies with the SD File System Specification created by the SD Association. Camera manufacturers may take the same liberties in their implementations.

It has been observed that some issues have been resolved after formatting with SD Formatter instead of in the camera.

"It is strongly recommended to use the SD Memory Card Formatter to format SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards rather than using formatting tools provided with individual operating systems. In general, formatting tools provided with operating systems can format various storage media including SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards, but it may not be optimized for SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards and it may result in lower performance."

I find it surprising as an "IT Tech" you have not come across hardware specific formatting tools...

P.S Are you an Apple Genius?

Why the offensive comment at the end.? Do you always get upset when people say something you don't like?

Where is your quote from. Is it from Leica? If so, I'm surprised as I would have thought that Leica would recommend an in-camera format as it is, as you put it, a "hardware specific formatting tool".

BTW, I have never used "SD Memory Card Formatter" and have never had an issue with SD card formatting for any camera.

And yes, I'm an IT person too, although I don't work at Apple. However I've always found that they are pleasant and try to be  helpful and I don't see any need to belittle them.

You may have misread @Miltz's post. He does not suggest using Mac or Windows format but the camera's format. The camera's format operation has been tuned for the card being used in the camera. No camera manufacturer recommends using the SD Formatter instead of their own. I would guess that >99% of camera owners use in-camera format operation.

I do see people in Apple Stores with this tag hanging from their necks, but these fine persons do not remotely have the looks of Von Neumann, Eisenstein, or others of that ilk.

Do forgive my ignorance, but what does "Apple Genius" actually convey?

PS I began my Apple journey with MacPlus in 1985  (the "Apple Genius" did not exist then) and now use a Macbook pro and an iphone– but have not felt the need for any genius input thus far

I dont mean to keep reviving this thread, but just wanted to let everyone know that the camera has been rock solid since switching the SD cards. I did a full shoot yesterday without a single issue. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

Bravo! Thanks for the update. It is always good to hear about solved problems.

Quick format or Overwrite? I've found Overwrite to be quite time consuming.
