Coffeecup Posted April 10, 2024 Share #1  Posted April 10, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm currently a bit deep in various systems. I think the CL has to go. 1. I shoot Basketball junior weekly with my Nikon D610 and 80-200 f2.8. I also have various Nikon film camera's and many F-glass. 2. I love strolling around, feeling nostalgic analogue, with my Leica M8. I have 5 primes to go with it (21, 25, 35, 50 and 90) 3. On vacations I bring my Fuji X-T1 with 3 primes (16, 35 and 50): reason is low cost, no fear of dropping, losing or stolen gear. Lenses are tiny (really small), plus it all is WR (I take it skiing). And with family holidays I like that the JPEG's are useable when properly metered. 4. I don't really know when I'm fitting in the CL in any other situations. Hence it sits unused most of the time, bought it brand new less than 2 years ago... Sooo I've asked for a quote at MPB, which is laughable at best while they are the ones giving the highest trade in prices: 1100 for the CL and 600 for the 18 Elmarit. I own the Sigma trio of f1.4 primes and also the f2.8 18-50 zoom. Those are all quoted between 125 and 215. Total price for the CL with 18 Elmarit and four Sigma lenses is 2400 euro's. As much as I think that I won't really miss it, I also have a strong case of sunk cost fallacy which isn't very helpful. I don't want to sell it through eBay or Marktplaats (Dutch marketplace) because of the usual idiots roaming this earth. So I'm a bit stuck because I think the MPB offer is too low for this like-new CL which even still has months of warranty on it.  It is more a rant than asking for advise, but I do like to know what the internet strangers think of this all. Do I sell off my Nikon D610 and Fuji system and Leica CL, to fund a modern mirrorless fullframe which actually is capable of shooting basketball while being small enough and WR for vacations? Like the Nikon Z6ii or the Lumix S5ii? Maybe a Sony A7? I'll have that one camera for both sports and vacations, and the M8 for other things (that sounds joyfully simple). Or do I keep things as they are, knowing that the CL will suffer more and more depreciation the longer I hold on to it. There's nothing really wrong with it, but I also don't seem to connect with it either. What would you do?
Advertisement Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Hi Coffeecup, Take a look here I have an itch (selling the CL for it?). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Edited April 10, 2024 by jankap
wda Posted April 10, 2024 Share #3 Â Posted April 10, 2024 You seem to be using your Fuji outfit, while I would use the CL and lenses. It is an entirely personal choice. Why not read my most visited review of the CL here: https://david2008.photium.com/news109766.html 1And then consider your options?

You mean, another option is to: ditch the XT1 and primes in favor of the CL. Keep the CL as travel cam and the D610 as sports cam. Could work too ofcourse. My only concern is weather sealing. Both the D610 and XT1 are weather resistant. I can lay the Nikon or the Fuji in the snow if I must, but wouldn't dare doing this with the CL. Off to reading your blog, thanks for posting. It will make for a very compact and very hard to beat mirrorless solution. Maybe not ideal to shoot sports, but great for traveling and as a companion to the M8 with a different lens option mounted. Set your Left Dial to bring up magnification and use the CL in A mode... Works almost as good as the the M8 RF. I do not mind MF on my TL2 which is very similar with the EVF mounted. And I think I would maybe even try shooting basketball with it (35mm or 50mm M lens mounted and pre-focused on interesting area's around the basket) Maybe I would even get shots your AF struggles with, like players in mid jump and so on... Not sure how your XT manages, and maybe you get more keepers using it with a fast AF and tracking. But I know that the results of the keepers with a Leica CL and good M lens will beat it easily. I love what my TL2 produces with my Summicron 35 M v3 for example, and with the CL 24 MP you have a lot more cropping potential than with the M8's 10MP. Not that I do not love my M8 results, but with 24 MP you can crop the 50mm eq. to 100mm eq. and still have 8 MP of very sharp pixels left.

I go skiing every year at the glaciers in Austria and I don't want to pamper the CL, hence the XT1 seems like an awesome companion. The Fujinons are really small, affordable and weather resistant. Which is something the TL-lenses lack. I do get solid keepers with the CL and the Sigma 16mm f1.4 below basket. AF is pretty good and reliable, which amazes me, but the noise performance isn't on the level of the D610. Especially a nasty color shift in skin tones is something I find hard to work with in post processing. There's also no proper fast tele. So right now it's the CL+16mm f1.4 prime and the D610 with 80-200mm F2.8. I think I've made up my mind about selling the cameras and lenses except the M8. The D610 with most of the lenses (except the manual ones), the XT1 with three primes and the CL with 18mm and 4 Sigma lenses should give me enough financial room for a new do-it-all camera. I'm on the fence about the Sony A7iii or A7iv, or the Nikon Z6ii. The last skiing trip is in 2 weeks and the basketball season is almost over. I'm not switching before, so still got a week or 3 before I'm moving in one direction or the other.

I have given up on that holy grail, certainly in the portable and compact department the M series is still very hard to beat for my needs. I still take my M9 on most days when it really matters with the Summcron 40C or Summicron 50mm. My TL2 is my backup for when I do not know what to expect really and usually that is with my tiny Summicron M 35mm mounted. It is almost as small and light as the 18mm TL and as said, I like 50mm eq. and MF lenses. Edited April 14, 2024 by dpitt
Rick in CO Posted April 16, 2024 Share #8 Â Posted April 16, 2024 When I used to shoot lacrosse games and horse jumping trials I found the most critical features of a camera to be fast, accurate autofocus and shortest shutter lag possible. Â This essentially means a pro-level camera. Â It might be a toss-up between the CL and the Fuji. Â I have the CL and the 18-56 Leica zoom plus three Sigma f1.4 contemporary prime lenses which I find to be excellent. Â Their only drawback for travel is their size. Â A comparison shoot between the two might be in order.

Coffeecup Posted May 7, 2024 Author Share #10  Posted May 7, 2024 (edited) I've since sold the CL with the 18mm to a happy previous CL-owner who missed it too much. He had his black one when it came out new for a couple of years. I've bought mine new at Leica Amsterdam and had the camera for about 1,5 years. I only lost €390,-, so there's not much pain. With that money I bought a Fuji XH2s speed demon. With the sale of the Sigma L-mount crop lenses I've bought the fast sport tele 50-140mm f2.8. Sony wasn't for me in the end, I really disliked the loose mount of L-mount and Nikon didn't really offered what I wanted. So I went all in Fujifilm, the main reason for holding that back was FF-FOMO. But since that was the only reason, I disgarded it.
