PeterBoyadjian Posted March 18, 2024 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well FML, I shot a 2nd birthday for one of my clients today and it looks like roughly 100 images did not record on to both the cards. For 40 minutes no photos were writing to the cards, looks like the DNG's are corrupted somehow. Anyone with a SL3 experience this? Welcome, dear visitor! LeicaR10 Posted March 18, 2024 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2024 (edited) PeterBoyadjian, This is really bad. When I had the M11s, I would get corrupt files on download from my SD cards. But, I was able to get the files recovered from the internal storage. Unfortunately, the SL3 does not have this capability. You might get a response from other early adopters of the SL3, but being so new, it might be a few days or weeks before they get hit with corrupt files. With my SL2 cameras and M10s, I normally take 1 SD card per camera and that is all I shoot with for that camera. But, I always run my cards first through SD Card Formatter, then format the SD card in camera. I download my work every day, then do the same process again with the SD cards. I have never gotten corrupt files on the SL2 or SL2-S nor M10-R/M cameras. The M11s (all variants) I used the aforemention process...it made no difference...I got corrupt files so the M11s found new homes. I know this doesn't help you now, but maybe in the future. In the meantime, I would contact Leica Customer Care by phone and certainly email them and let them know what occurred. You might also try doing a camera reset as well. r/ Mark PS. I would send Leica Customer Care the photograph you posted here as proof. Edited March 18, 2024 by LeicaR10
Stevejack Posted March 18, 2024 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2024 So it was actually writing the photos to the cards, but when you download them the DNGs are corrupt? Are the file sizes the same as your non-corrupt DNGs? Which software are you trying to open them in?
Gateway77 Posted March 18, 2024 Share #4 Posted March 18, 2024 Yes - I had this over on a handful of files since I've been testing the SL3. Only on one session - and when I was just using a SD card alone. No explanation as to why and so far has not happened again. Will update if I've any more info on this. jaapv Posted March 18, 2024 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2024 Standard question in cases like this: If the cards came from another camera, I assume you formatted before use?
anickpick Posted March 18, 2024 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Did you transfer the files from the card to your computer (preferably card slot - not cable), and did you try opening the photos in your photo software? hjddd Posted March 18, 2024 Share #8 Posted March 18, 2024 My M11-P has the same problem , but SL3 may have more serious problem ^
Photoworks Posted March 18, 2024 Share #9 Posted March 18, 2024 I have only seen this when some files from another camera were on the card. I have been testing SL3 every day in photo and video and I have not seen it. I am using the CF Express card. If the images are important to you I would put the card aside until you run it true recovery software. I like Spinrite from GRC, it is a little challenging on the Mac but probably the best. On the Mac I have used Disk Drill for a client with success. some photos were incomplete, but I was able to crop some of them.
PeterBoyadjian Posted March 18, 2024 Author Share #10 Posted March 18, 2024 4 hours ago, jaapv said: Standard question in cases like this: If the cards came from another camera, I assume you formatted before use? Yes both cards were formatted before use, So DNGs 1424 and 1480, the files that could not be opened on the SL3 did import into Lightroom. Between 1425-1479 DNGs are missing, well I have photos with those file numbers but those are photos that were taken later on. DNG 1480 taken at 2:45, DNG 1478 was shot at 3:34 The time stamps, and file number is completely off. DNG 1561 was the last photo I took for the event at 3:58, but DNG 1593 which technically should have been taken after was shot at 3:07. Welcome, dear visitor! algrove Posted March 18, 2024 Share #12 Posted March 18, 2024 So far for me no issues with my SL3 files. Please keep guys informed on what Leica Customer care says.
steveBK Posted March 18, 2024 Share #13 Posted March 18, 2024 Wasn't upgrading my M10R to M11 because of the firmware/hardware/who knows debacle. Was curious of SL3 shared enough tech to have similar.. I think I'll take my mirrorless dollars elsewhere now.
PeterBoyadjian Posted March 18, 2024 Author Share #14 Posted March 18, 2024 Might be a memory card issue, Sandisk Cfe will not open a couple DNGs in camera but the Lexar SD will.
Herr Barnack Posted March 18, 2024 Share #15 Posted March 18, 2024 Here we go again - yet another Leica camera that is plagued with defects.
Robert E Posted March 18, 2024 Share #16 Posted March 18, 2024 It's unbelievable that Leica has screwed up so bad on both the M11 and SL3. They are supposed to be the leader and produce the best cameras! What a disappointment !! My SL2 has never had any of these problems. Now I see why so many have dumped their M11's and gone back to the M10's. This just blows my mind that their new flagship SL3 and flagship M11 has so many quirks and problems. Where's the testing, where's the quality control. This is like Microsoft throwing out a new Windows version .0 And not to even mention the SL2s with post after post of problems with that version I've read over the last year.
jigesh Posted March 18, 2024 Share #17 Posted March 18, 2024 Perhaps sample-size too small yet (unlike M-11/M11P cases) to conclude one way or the other? 1

Still worrying. I would be rather p!$$ed if this happens to me, especially on a paid gig. Funny that the test period didn’t get this sorted out.
PeterBoyadjian Posted March 18, 2024 Author Share #19 Posted March 18, 2024 DNG/Time 1423 3:24 1424 2:41 1561 3:58 1562 3:05 Possible that some images were written over, not sure what the hell is going on but my Leica Rep told me to follow up with him tomorrow at noon. I going take a walk tomorrow and take a 1000 photos and see if I happens again. Welcome, dear visitor! Paul2660 Posted March 18, 2024 Share #20 Posted March 18, 2024 As a frequent viewer of this site, "daily", I just can't remember a "host" of SL2-S posts reporting problems. No arguments intended, but from reading this forum, it has always seemed that the SL2-S at least for photo use has had no more issues than the SL2. Again I just may have missed all the negative SL2-S posts. I agree there have been plenty of M11 posts about problems. Paul C
