It shows Leica is not considering itself as a company for professionals. Rich people and wannabe’s only.

Professionals have no issue buying an additional two-battery charger (and additional batteries). I've worked with several who wouldn't use a camera if they didn't have an extra charger, just in case one charger goes bad. The SL3 has a built-in charge port (compatible with ubiquitous USB chargers), plus whatever else you buy.

I think it's the other way, non-professional users don't trust that the built-in charger will be enough for their needs, if they occasionally go through all of their batteries on the same day.

The off-grid safari example here is extreme, because it's so isolated and the trip is very weight-limited, so power will always be an issue. Most of us aren't away from the electricity grid for weeks.

I would not mind buying spare batteries. But my camera is a capturing device, not a loading device. 400$/€ is overpriced totally.

Which would the probably 90% or more of Magnum photographers who shoot with Leica cameras be?

May be those get a charger for free.
believe me, wedding photographers use a lot of batteries and are constantly charging: either the camera, either for flashes. A pro camera needs a charger. Leica made a clear statement here, together with their excellent quick customer service.

I would go so far as to say that every camera that uses a rechargeable battery needs a charger.  Even a hobbyist could use a charger.

Think about the BC-SCL6 USB-C charger:  Plastic casing, power cord, six tiny red dot LEDs, a couple of wires - maybe $5-10 in actual parts - and made in an Asian sweatshop.  Leica probably pays $20-25 each for them - then they expect their customers who just spent $6995 to pay $220 each for them.

Leica made a clear statement, alright.

People will not complain if it costs 7500$ with a charger

but it will cause a huge problem if one buys something that is 2% of the cost.

In that case Leica should have pitched the price higher and included a voucher for a charger at a nominal price.

That is the true LEICA way.

I suspect that the Leica marketing department is young and doesn't remember how it is done back in the DMR times.

I must read that directive Does it say : “You may not sell a camera with a charger in the box”.? Anyway, a directive is just a directive. It can only have force when embedded in national law.

https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/sectors/electrical-and-electronic-engineering-industries-eei/radio-equipment-directive-red/one-common-charging-solution-all_en

Some highlights from the EU link:

"Unbundling the sale of a charger from the sale of the electronic device"

"The 'common charging' requirements will apply to all handheld mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, handheld videogame consoles, e-readers, earbuds, keyboards, mice, and portable navigation systems as of 28 December 2024"

Then they should have dropped the price of the camera by 200€, so people can buy  the charger at the same price as the SL2 camera + charger bundle.
Instead, it’s a hidden price raise

Maybe they already dropped the price of the camera vs. what they would charge when including a standard charger, who knows 😇

I think unbundling the charger from the camera is a good move. For some people charging in camera will suffice, some people will already have a charger for the same batteries from a previous camera, some people will only want a single battery charger, some people will need the double charger. I think it's a good thing that people can choose what they need and not be given a  "one size fits all" device they might not need or use.

Personally I find the absence of a charger a deal-breaker.

The official Sony battery charger is less than 50€, and you can find third party options for 20€.

Leica is 155.

Interesting thread. Why bother with Leica, then? I'd break the deal and buy a professional camera that comes with a charger.

If I was still earning money with photography, the upgrade wouldn’t be worth it to me, so yes, another camera, even brand would be bought. The m might not have real competition, the SL has plenty.
