Digilux 2 serial numbers and sensor failure

Recommended Posts

Advertisement (gone after registration)

I have just bought a Digilux 2 serial number 3016XXX and am encouraged by the fact the later numbers seem to be ok judging by the forum response.

My concern is that It might be ok now but what if it goes later and Leica withdraw their refit warranty a year or two down the line (They may have done already ?)

I have no idea if the sensor is the original or if it has been replaced and would very much appreciate any advice in regard to checking this out and also if need be possibly sending it back for a sensor re-fit.(how difficult would that be ?)

I am UK (Manchester) based and if any one has any information, phone numbers, or e-mail contacts I could use I would be very grateful.

KInd Regards

Bob

Bob,

Welcome to the forum.

If you want to know whether your Digilux 2 has had its sensor replaced just contact Customer Service at Leica HQ in Solms and quote your serial number. You'll need to navigate to the contacts page which lists phone numbers and email details. If I were you I would ring them because others have sometimes found email to be a protracted process and they speak English very well.

Leica has honoured its warranty for five or six years so far and has a first class reputation for doing precisely that over the past decades. Perhaps the major problem would be if Sony (the manufacturer of the Digilux 2's sensor) came to the end of its stock of replacment sensors. However that sensor was widely used across a large range of cameras so that seems unlikely for a good while.

All the best for 2012 in the first place!

I have had my Digilux 2 for some 4 weeks now and am absolutely thrilled about its workflow and the resulting pics not to say I have become sort of addicted to this camera. The other day I realized that there is a whitish vertical hairline in the righthand part of some pictures noticeable best in dark parts (see marked section in sample file at 100%): 232.JPG

Has anybody seen this before? Does this ask for sensor replacement? From what I know my D2 (serial # 2998xxx) has its original sensor.

Thanks for any input on this.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum, Xlian, and a healthy and prosperous 2012 to you!

As you're probably aware what you've shown doesn't fit with the D2's sensor's common failure mode, which is typically a purple cast over the picture or no picture at all. The fault that you've found looks to me to be a 'hot' pixel that's preventing other pixels in its row from reading out to the processor. Usually the hot pixel can be mapped out (by Leica) so that the processor and demosaicing software ignores it and the problem goes away.

In this instance it my be slightly more complicated because of the other affected pixels so I recommend contacting a Leica dealer or Leica Solms directly and enquiring what to do. If you send an email I recommend including the photo you posted so that they can see the problem for themselves.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts on this Pete,

I must confess am not too familiar with the whole sensor business as I am a D2 newbie and I reckoned this might be the beginning of a collapsing CCD. The hot-pixel problem does not sound much better though and I guess it means sending my camera to Leica Germany anyway. No idea what they will make out of this. I'll keep you updated.

Unfortunately I do not have a second D2 (yet!) that can replace the faulty sample while it is away. As D2s do not seem to be growing on trees these days (there hasn't been a single one on Ebay since Xmas) I am thinking about buying a Leica X1 or Fuji Finepix X-100 as a backup and alternative that will accompany me on my planned marathons this year, where size does matter ;)

Cheers to London

Christian

Christian, (I now understand your forum name:))

With the greatest respect your problem doesn't look so bad and in fact I struggle to see it in the sample picture you provided. If it was my D2, then rather than sending it all the way to Solms for Leica to look at and be without my camera for weeks or months, I would probably just keep shooting with it because the single line of pixels should be easily fixed during post processing using a stamp or clone tool. You may feel differently and I entirely accept that.

I recently bought my second D2 from a dutch seller on Ebay. According to the seller it had a serial number starting with 30xxx, so I didn't need to worry about the sensor. There was a photo of the number on the makers box in the ad, but when I received the D2, it turned out to have a BLANK space on the camera bottom where the serial number should be. I asked the seller about this, but (obviously) he didn't answer my mail. At first I thought I had bought a stolen camera, but it doesn't look like the serial number has been rubbed away. I sent the camera to Leica for replacing the black rubber grip that was slipping off, which they did for free. Leica didn't comment on the serial number, though. Anyone has an idea about why my D2 has no serial number? Could an earlier owner have replaced the camera bottom and the lcd, which is one piece, with a new one?

It may not be anything sinister. Both of my D2's serial numbers have rubbed off the bottom so t looks to me like the ink didn't last as long as it perhaps should have.

Thanks. Good to hear I'm not the only one with a camera like this. It has probably worn off.

Thanks. I've tried that before to know the shutter counts which is 2931. It also says NO.: S010408290055. Does that mean that the serial number rather begins with 29 and not 30? If I then press on "Display", I get Camera info 2, which says: 1 st.: 2010 + date and time, A: 2011 + date and time and B: 2011 + date and time. Any idea what this means?

Hi

I haven't been using my Digilux for almost a year. When i tried it recently, the image from both the EVF and the LCD is now mostly vertical lines with splashes of colour.

I'm guessing that this might be the dreaded sensor failure?

My serial number is 2991xxx

Does anyone know if Leica are still offering to replace the sensor under extended warranty?

Thanks

Ernst
