The new 40MP Fujifilm X100VI where Leica could and should have gone with the CL instead of bottling out.

Recommended Posts

I’m keeping my CL kit and TL lenses. I still think they work well and produce great images.

Separately I tried a new SL3 today and there’s a lot to like in terms of controls and UI. But it’s still big and it’s still heavy, if a noticeable fraction lighter. I can’t help thinking what might have been if Leica might have developed a CL2 with some of the control and UI upgrades from the Q3 and SL3…

That's exatcly what I'm waiting for: a modern CL2, with full-frame or asp-c sensor I don't care. The previous CL camera only needed a better AF and IBIS. I'm afraid we'll never see it from Leica...

Nikon, for example, released the ZF camera that is what Leica should have done imo with the CL: a small camera with a classic look that works great with both modern and manual lenses, only 24mpx, IBIS, reliable AF and excellent high ISO performance. Price is also very attractive, most non professional photographers don't need anything else.

I kept my TL lenses because I used them with the SL2 which I recently sold because it was simply too big and heavy for me even with TL lenses.

If the resale prices on the X100V were anything to go by, Leica probably could've still sold a lot of X3 or CL2 regardless of a higher price point.

I am currently on a trip to Tokyo and brought both the CL and X100V with me.  Was browsing the Leica boutique when another tourist came in complaining about lugging her full frame Canon gear everywhere and wanted something digital, interchangeable but smaller.  The associate showed her the SL (which she said was even bigger than her Canon), Q, D-LUX and M, so she was just about to leave disappointed when I pointed out the CL (Paul Smith edition) sitting in a cabinet.  She was actually pretty interested in it.  I think Fuji has really opened up interest in the APS-C market; wishful thinking, but really hoping Leica revives it

And as much as I love the CL, I did swap to the X100V for the rainy Tokyo days; the autofocus is just frankly much better than the CL.  If they could improve the autofocus, add IBIS and weather sealing, we would have the perfect travel camera.  And I wouldn't have to be the one who carries 2 APS-C cameras on a trip.

I'm looking for a way back into the CL having previously owned one. I have a Panasonic S5ii and while small lenses aren't a plenty, then some of the sigma contemporary lenses aren't too bad in size and are certainly good in quality, will be looking to use some of these on the CL also and fill in a gap in the wider fl's with some voigtlander M glass. 2 different types of camera, 1 lens mount will serve me well I think and maybe hope that Panny or Leica one day do an L mount, FF, AF unit in a Q type form.

Exactly. Its slightly worrying that my SL2-S doesn't see much daylight these days...;-)

Mine neither ... It stayed behind again today .

I tend to pick up my CL2 .I have the 18 ,23 35.60 and 55-135.

Just right in terms of weight and I`m happy with the quality.

I also sometimes use the CL with M lenses .

To return to the topic of this thread, I think what I actually would like is a body like a Sony A7c in size and weight with say 47 megapixels.

That would be light enough to use with TL (or other aps-c ) lenses for casual situations and could be used with FF lenses if required.

Perhaps a (the) new Panasonic "compact" FF L-mount camera?

Or the current Sigma FPL or the rumored so-called "M12" which has little to do with an M camera.

Surely the used prices of the T, TL and CL are enough to show Leica that there is a market out there for a new whizz bang replacement!

Can only hope...   oh wait, I'm sure I read on this site that a Leica copyrighted a new Camera name a month or so ago.  Any news on that?

I believe that is for a new D-Lux. Sadly I cannot see Leica resurrecting their APS-C range. I think their thinking is to upsell (horrible word) people to either Q or M cameras.

Such a shame!

I'm going through a camera crisis of the very first world issues!

I've lost interest in my M10. I think sometimes I just want to go to the playground with my son and his mates and just point, shoot and take pics.  The M10 as my only camera has become something I have just lost interest in grabbing.

So I am thinking of selling M10 and picking up a Q and maybe another brand or just the Q for now.

if there was a CL replacement I would consider that.

You could look for a "mint" CL of course but the prices are way up nowadays..........

On the other hand I still very much enjoy my TL2 together with the zooms.......
