I have an MP 240 and SL system. I enjoy the MP with 50 f1.4. It’s been about 8-9 years since I have been shooting with it. I have really enjoyed the camera and really learnt photography on it. There are are challenges with the night photography  and occasional black out. I have adapted with the camera. The reason I am thinking of an upgrade is whether the new camera offers a significantly better experience or better photographs.

I have been again looking at X2D and was a bit too tempted but again I love the M.

The other thought was should I just get a 50 Noctilux?

Apologies for varied thoughts.

A M10-P, M10-R and both M11's are all a significant upgrade from your MP240. I did that upgrade a while ago and never looked back even once.
Now the X2D, that is a quantum leap. I could not part from my Ms so I added the Hasselblad on top.
You will not be sorry with either of the options, just keep the M system strong.
And keep in mind that 85% of folks who acquire the Noctilux sell it eventually - I sold both f/1 and f/0.95

Thank You so much. I won’t part with the M. I am thinking along the same lines.
Didn’t know about Nocti - Thank You for that.

Seems like M10-R is a much stable system. I haven’t kept myself up to date with the systems. Learning about them now.

On eBay M10-R shows about $7500 - is that the range? What’s a good price for this system?

The Hasselblad X system is a completely different beast.

It really comes down to whether you want to keep using a rangefinder or not.

Thank You- you are correct, they indeed are. Just thought of putting it out there to get some perspective.

I guess you know that you are suffering from GAS. The variety from an X2D to a M240 to a Noctilux is quite a stretch and can't be explained only with improvement of one’s photography.

If I were you and digging deeper would be the aim, I’d get a film M and started B&W photography. When done for a year or so, you’ll be on a new level none of the other mentioned “cures” could offer.

That said, I I were in the market for new equipment and the M system would be my main focus, and digital my way, I’d buy an M10P without further thinking. Plus, as you seem well-funded, a 35mm Summicron because 35mm is a whole new universe for a 50mm guy.

In my very humble opinion, and I know many would disagree, the Noctiluxes are speciality lenses and won't add much to your photography considering you already shoot with a Summilux.

Thank You so much. I don't know what GAS stands for.

I have a 35mm summicron - found 50mm to be more closer to what I like in my photos. I like your suggestion on getting a film M - that's something to look forward in the future. Fow now, I feel I would like to upgrade an M. I will also look at M10P - much appreciate your help.

GAS

means gear acquisition syndrome. We all have it. Some badly, some only lightly, like myself. But I can relate to feeling the urge to upgrade the shelf to improve one’s photography because the photographic life feels a bit stale and hollow. But gear can't fill that creative void, and so the vicious GAS circle begins and will only stop when the next big step in your photography journey has been taken.

But here’s the rub: focusing on gear will remove you from your initial goal to improve your work. That’s why there are rarely accomplished photographers who are also collectors or extensive gear owners, at least on a non-professional level.

Basically, money can't buy making better photos.

Thank You! Makes sense - I am sure I have it :). For now, I am in the market to find an upgrade after 8-9 years on the same camera. I enjoy what I shoot.

Usually I would recommend the M10 because that's what I did. But I upgraded for different reasons, and I feel the M10 won't do it for you. I would ecommend staying in the M system. There, you might want to upgrade to the M10-R or the M11. Since you used the M240 for a long time, you seem to be comfortable with keeping a camera that you enjoy. That meens if you have the funds, and plan to keep the new camera just as long, I'd go for the newest model (M11 or even M11-P).

Sounds good! There's a fine line between updating your gear for technical reasons and GAS. I'd say you fall in the first category, given your purchase record 😉. But there's another crucial level to the discussion: new gear can motivate you to go out and shoot. The only question is how long. The M system encourages me perfectly and sustainably; it sounds like you feel the same way.

That's great advice - I was very fortunate to have MP240 as my first camera, and I have enjoyed every bit of it.

I was planning to sell it for a newer model however my daughter who is very young says she wants MP240 as her first camera, so I am keeping it for her. I am planning to go to Leica store next week to see how these newer cameras feel.

I am on the forum after many years - great to be back and connected and get such good suggestions. Thank you again everyone.

Thank You so much for your thoughts! Much appreciate it - yes any new gear motivates everyone. M is perfect - it's small and snuggly. If you hear from my friends and family - they have always seen me with the camera since the time I started photography. You seem someone who is also very passionate about photography. Great to see that.
