The Voigtländer company was founded in Vienna in 1756. In 1849 a branch was opened in Braunschweig and in 1868 Braunschweig finally became the company headquarters. Due to the narrowness of Campestrasse in Braunschweig, the company was gradually relocated to the location in Braunschweig-Gliesmarode from 1915 onwards and the camera and lenses were manufactured there. The modern multi-story optical production building with large glass windows was completed in 1957. From 1956 Voigtländer belonged to Carl Zeiss. Due to increasing competition and management errors, Voigtländer ran into increasing difficulties from the mid-1960s onwards and the factory was finally closed in 1972. At peak times, up to 3,000 employees worked here. Most of the factory buildings still stand today, and numerous different commercial businesses and social organizations are housed here. What is particularly impressive is the size of the site and the buildings.
