Which 28mm M would you choose?

Yes it's a bit of a gamble, but the price is less than when it's in production.  The samples from the prototype look great though.

1:  The top choice is always any Leica made 28mm, ignore the aperture/speed, just get the best you want to afford.

2: The next choice is always Zeiss made 28mm, again, ignore the aperture/ speed . 

3: The last choice could be the claimed “best in its class” or “best budget”.  This seems to change everyday. Once it was TTartisan, then CV (f1.5, f2, f2.8j), and recently Thypoch. If you wait a few more day, I am sure there will be something new.

Adams took that image during his "Pictorialism" phase with a soft focus lens.  He soon abandoned that style for "Realism".

I chose the first LTM version of the Voigtlander,  the 28/1.9, and bolted an M adapter on it, as the most interesting 28mm I've ever had in terms of replicating classical Leica glow at wider openings, where differences actually count and where I'm looking for special things from lenses. It's a factor that I'm more into overall pictorial effect than I am into pixel peeping resolution for print sizes I will never ever actually make.

It is the atmosphere of the silver halide, I think, that is used effectively. And there is no plug in for that yet, I am looking around for it, as my creativity needs a boost sometimes in a cheap way, that is.) 🫠

As to the works of R-Mutt, the artist some years before meditated some time on chocolate bars in Paris by RichArt. Well . .  I think 'his' urinal is made out of ArMut, I'm afraid. (Armut is poverty - of mind?, but guess what, sixty years later in Italy there was an Arte Povera stream...)

Which pic?  I can't really see it, is it the one showing the underside where the painted body meets the mount?  Or the focus tab maybe?  

I guess production version will have more attention to detail.

My silver Elcan replica had to go back under warranty because the aperture became jerky/stiff.  The black one is slightly out of calibration when focusing up close and wide open, so also needs to go back...

Contemplating the CV 28 1.5, the Typoch 28 1.4, or the Leica Summicron close-focus 28. Of course, very different prices, but disregarding that, it feels like the CV and the Typoch are really bringing something interesting to the table (the Summicron seems like a fine all around lens, but unclear what it is doing especially better or more special these days for that price point). The Typoch rendering especially is very compelling to me - has a special feel to the images IMO. The CV wins on a smaller size and better sharpness wide open (and a better focus throw IMO).

I find the paint on the LLL lenses to be very soft. Almost like the black paint on Leica MP. It will wear easily regardless of silver or black paint. LLL = light lens lab 

8E = 8 element summicron (Product # 11308)

MP = Leica MP (Product # 10302)

IROOA = IROOA lens hood (Product # 12571)

 

I thought these were well known abbreviations in the Leica community. I should probably not assume anymore.

I have one fully black IROOA and one panda, which fully reproduces the color scheme of the original one. The black one fits really tight on my LLL 8E copy and scratched the paint immediately. However it does not get into trouble when putting on my LLL Elcan black and the original Summicron 8E, both of them fits with a very comfortable tolerance. I can rotate them freely without hearing the scratching sound or feeling the resistance from scratching on these two lenses.

Sold my elmarit-asph to acquire a nokton. Nokton was the favorite compagnon of my M10R in all my wanderings of the last months (Leuven, Antwerp, Koksijde and Arles). A few pictures to illustrate (in this format not doing justice to the quality of the Nokton). A few at f1,5. Not one moment I regretted the swap.
