Daniel Novello Posted December 4, 2023 Share #5 Posted December 4, 2023 Yes. And what is referred to as zoom creep. Pointed downwards, the lens will zoom out on its own.

LEGEND Posted December 6, 2023 Share #7 Posted December 6, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) My first 24-90 had little bit of zoom creep but no barrel play. My second one that I have now have no zoom creep or barrel play. Perhaps Leica changed something in between so now is this problem fixed... msh58 Posted December 11, 2023 Share #8 Posted December 11, 2023 I had zoom creep from 35 mm onwards and some play at the 90 mm zoom position on my 24-90, which was an early example of the lens. It was sent to Leica for overhaul and now it works perfectly. It is conceivable that they have changed some lubricants in the manufacturing process in order for the lens work optimally. - Matti
Camaro5 Posted December 12, 2023 Share #9 Posted December 12, 2023 My 24-90 was made in early 2021 and it has neither zoom creep or barrel play. It's as tight as a drum. I asked Josh at Leica Store Miami about this and he said if a lens develops this over time it's a simple fix, but (obviously) it has to go back to Leica. Planetwide Posted December 17, 2023 Share #11 Posted December 17, 2023 Mine is an early version, but it was serviced by Leica Germany earlier this year. No zoom creep or wobble.
lanetomlane Posted December 18, 2023 Share #12 Posted December 18, 2023 Mine suffers from zoom creep but no barrel play.
Donald M Posted December 18, 2023 Share #13 Posted December 18, 2023 I must be lucky then. I made thousands of pictures and walked many, many kilometres with it in all kinds of weather and surroundings. No zoom creep or wobbles or whatever. At full opening and when pixel peeping the fixed apo summicron lenses (28, 35, 50 and 90) I compared it with are better, but stopped down a bit the differences are much smaller. The weight is high but two (or more) apo summicrons are not light either. All lenses have their specific purpose of course.

Yes, this is an issues with every 24-90mm (some people say it theirs doesn't have it, but it is probably not the case it is just a minor one). You can minimise it by not attaching lens hood and touching frontal lens barrel in transportation etc. You can send it to leica and they'll adjust it, but it is like 300$ and it will return after some time. What's your serial number starting with? Also does anyone has a list of serial numbers per year for 24-90mm ? Edited April 25, 2024 by pf4eva

ALScott Posted May 6, 2024 Share #17 Posted May 6, 2024 I got a 24-90 on 4/25 from Josh at Leica Miami, who was great by the way, that had just returned from Leica for CLA. I saw this thread and checked it and there is the tiniest bit of play in the barrel. I did compare it to a brand new Leica 100-400 I got which has absolutely zero play. I should finally have a body this week and will test it. I just can't believe that it would come back from Leica and the play would cause or be a symptom of any kind of an issue. cj3209 Posted May 6, 2024 Share #18 Posted May 6, 2024 I don't see the zoomcreep as being an issue unless you're shooting straight downwards or upwards - lol. Rather, for me, it was the size/weight that made me sell it; I felt like I was carrying a weapon on the street...
ALScott Posted May 6, 2024 Share #19 Posted May 6, 2024 There is zero zoom creep. I checked that and shook the crap out of it pointed straight down with no movement at all. I am talking about a tiny back and forth, wouldn't call it a wobble, of the barrel inside the outer housing of the lens body.
