As has been said many times before

As has been said many times before the color of the M11 needs to be adjusted. And even after adjustment it is not perfect. And the Leica  does nothing. As a consumer I simply switched to another manufacturer for my purposes. After 25 years of shooting with Leica cameras this story is over for me.

You might want to edit your profile, which says you still have two M bodies and a couple of lenses.

If it needs adjusting-adjust it. One of the most basic things in postprocessing. The camera does not take the photograph-the photographer does. There is not one camera on the market that produces my taste in colours out of the box. Why should Leica be different? Just profile it.

Well said Jaap. Color is a very subjective thing also. Check on the websites of those who speak out loudest. To my eyes  i found images that were very neutral and as cold as an Alps slaughterhouse. Not to my liking at all. But that is just my subjective view.

And btw, there would not be any revival of film photography if film colors were correct.

Thus one could argue you are not only buying a camera but a color style that you might like or not.

I have always tweaked the colour of all cameras I bought over the last twentyfive years because I did not like them. And that includes Sony Fuji, Canon -and Leica.  It is a basic requirement for good photography in my book.

‘Pro Photographer/YouTuber’ calls out the purple tint in his video made 4 days ago.

I find it hard to understand why a professional photographer, who noted the WB tint offset with the M11 - wouldn't fix the issue at source with in-camera custom WB with a calibrated target. It's as if people have a mental block that prevents them from fixing the issue as the shot is taken, and instead tries to rely on post-processing to guesstimate a fix.

That’s a fair point he’s a pro so should use a WB card. Most non pro’s taking photos with the Leica won’t want to use one everytime they take a photo.

Guess the point of the video is the the tint is a really issue and very odd Leica can’t fix it.

It only needs repeating - if at all- if the light changes significantly. Leicas built in grey card white balance works exceptionally well and is essential when shooting under uncorrected LED lights which produce a near impossible to correct yellow cast otherwise

As the latest update for the M11 has just been released without any changes to white balance, I think it's safe to assume that the white balance, which has undoubtedly a rather nasty magenta tint, will no longer be corrected.

Perhaps the correction is not as simple as some people here hope. The fact is that the M11, Q3 and SL3 have the same 60MP sensor and yet the white balance is different on all three. The worst (magenta tint) is on the first released M11 and the best white balance (with the most natural colours) is on the last released SL3. (and yes, I have worked with a three cameras myself Obviously Leica has learned over time.

I'm neither a technician nor a software developer, just a simple photographer, but my guess is that something has been changed in the hardware to improve white balance that can't be done with a simple software update.

The YouTuber linked above shows in his video, starting at minute 3, how heavily magenta-biased the M11's white balance is. He himself uses a fixed setting of 5200K, which doesn’t really help because that’s the color temperature, but the M11 then adds a magenta-heavy tint. He says something like, “It might not be immediately noticeable that it’s so magenta-heavy...” – and even at that point, my eyes start hurting just from watching. :) This magenta cast occurs under completely normal daylight conditions. He then adjusts the tint slider and compares it to the neutral image edge. Anyone can see here that the tint chosen by the M11 is just entirely off. You only need to watch the video from minute 3 to 6.

This issue can indeed be remedied with an instant white balance adjustment before shooting (which makes the image usable straight away) or by post-editing the DNG file. I've been doing either one or the other – or both – with the M11 for almost two years now, and it works. However, I’m still waiting for the service team to calibrate my M11 so that this extra effort, which I’ve never had with any other Leica or any other camera brand, is no longer necessary.

As for the images shown here in the M11 images thread: I’m grateful for every black-and-white photo.:)

How would this generate enough traffic for a YouTuber?

I don’t know what to make of this comment. I neither know the YouTuber nor did I post the link to him. Moreover, I believe that in the later part of the video, he unjustly promotes his presets as a solution to the problem. A preset cannot properly fix the magenta cast. It can only save a fixed setting for both temperature AND tint. A preset cannot adjust the tint alone. Others here have shared solutions that involve adjusting the tone curves of the individual color channels. However, this is also a solution that can only be applied AFTER the photo has been taken, and in my opinion, it doesn’t improve white balance at all lighting situations in the way I would like.

Leica could still address this issue by introducing a way to customize the white balance individually. I’ve decided not to wait around aimlessly but to have the recalibration done while my M11 is still under warranty. The camera has been with Leica’s service team for a month now, and I haven’t even received a confirmation of receipt yet. However, I remain optimistic that they will resolve this.

I'd imagine the service department will be crossing their fingers that even if you're happy about it when it returns you keep it to yourself. It's bad enough getting inoperable Leica gear fixed at the moment! If I was head of service I'd put your camera on the do not open until Xmas 2025 shelf🤣
