Leica warranty - does it really need proof of purchase?

People here who have dealt with Leica warranty before, has anyone been requested to submit this? In the official Leica warranty conditions, it says it is custom's obligation "To provide a copy of the original proof of purchase for the protected product when requested to do so by LEICA;"

I am looking to buy a slightly used M11 with lots of warranty left, but seller does not have original proof of purchase. Is it enough that we de-register the camera from his Leica account and re-register to mine?

It will depend on the country as well as Leica's policies. Here in Oz *proof of purchase* is not limited to a receipt. It could mean a credit card charge or stamped warranty card. Simply that the camera hasn't been around for two years would be enough, as would be a Manufacuring date in the serial number. We also have a statutory warranty which is law and not something the manufacturer can stipulate. And it's backed up by strong consumer protection for goods bought here.

But that's here. And you'll need to check with your local laws to see what is *proof*. Otherwise an email to Leica themselves for clarification won't hurt. They may be able to give you a date to work from.

My camera stores all keep a copy of the things I purchase from them. I don't bother and they dig them up when I need them. Maybe the original owner can ask the store for a reprint? The stores I deal with can easily search by name or serial number for cameras and lenses.

I would be very hesitant to buy a Leica without a receipt. Because that receipt also proves that the camera is legally obtained from a proper dealer. No receipt is a red flag for me.

I'm in Canada, but not sure if the camera is even purchased from here, as far as I know, even if there is a law around warranty here, they can require proof of purchase still. The seller had purchased the camera second hand to begin with, so I have no contact with original owner, we will try to contact the original owner for receipt before proceeding then.

Anything I have had fixed under warranty (very few occasions) has been done without checking proof of purchase - I assume because Leica has its own records of when an item was sold.

I have never tried to use a warranty for an item that I didn't buy new. In principle that should not be relevant, unless the camera had been reported stolen.
