chris_tribble Posted October 24, 2023 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Given the problems I've had recently, and the other cases reported, it might be useful to see how wide-spread this problem is and, if possible, to check on how old the cameras involved are. If the responses to this poll are significant I plan to share it with Stefan Daniel so that A. Leica is aware of the scale of the issue, and B. to see if SL2 owners can have any reassurance regarding the cause of the problem, what remedy is available, and if it can be avoided in the future. CAMERA MODEL and Serial - SL2 (****8584) DATE of PURCHASE - 2020/06/19 DATE OF FAILURE (if known) - 2023/09 If others could use this format, I'm happy to compile the information CAMERA MODEL and Serial - DATE of PURCHASE - YYYY/MM/DD DATE OF FAILURE (if known) - YYYY/MM Thanks! Advertisement Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 Hi chris_tribble, Take a look here POLL - SL2 / SL2-S "System Error" fault. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted October 25, 2023 Author Share #2 Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) Gosh. 109 views so far, but no reports. Maybe it’s the case that it’s only a small number of users like me, @Gavin Cato, and @HPFM who have been affected. If this is the case I’m almost glad is it’s not a systemic issue, and I hope all those other SLs out there remain rock solid work horses. It also raises the question for me of whether there was something weird I was doing with settings that led to the problem. 🫤 Edited October 25, 2023 by chris_tribble
hoolyproductions Posted October 25, 2023 Share #3 Posted October 25, 2023 Yes, just a 'nil return' from me. I have experienced the dreaded system error but it was a result of a very hard impact on a stone floor (now repaired/serviced by Leica). My SL2-S has otherwise been faultless since I got it in 2021. I've also had two separate SL2 cameras which have been flawless. I think I did get a 'freeze' on two or three occasions but not for a long time and it was solved by a hard restart.
HPFM Posted October 25, 2023 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2023 Concerning my SL2 - system error I got an offer and information of Leica Wetzlar: Shutter defect, duration of repair approximately 2 month, will be handled as goodwill and not put to account. 2 month without SL....😵💫 I love my M11 and Q3😂 1
chris_tribble Posted October 25, 2023 Author Share #5 Posted October 25, 2023 @HPFM many thanks for the update. I’m beginning to feel hopeful that this isn’t a plague, just a local infection! 🙂
Stuart Richardson Posted October 25, 2023 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2023 I don't see the poll for some reason, but I can say that I have not been affected by it either...
helged Posted October 25, 2023 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) For what's worth: No problem with SL, SL2, SL2-S on my side. Can't say that I have seen/heard of complaints either (besides those posted here, clearly).
algrove Posted October 25, 2023 Share #8 Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) I have 3 SL cameras and not a single issue with any. Have not heard of issues until now. Edited October 25, 2023 by algrove
LocalHero1953 Posted October 25, 2023 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2023 No problem with my SL2-S, despite intense use.
chris_tribble Posted October 25, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted October 25, 2023 Interesting if the “system fault” error fault really is as rare as Leica Australia says it is (as reported by @Gavin Cato re his truly awful experience of failures) I live in hope! graeme_clarke Posted October 25, 2023 Share #11 Posted October 25, 2023 I don't want to tempt providence but my SL2-S bought in December 2021 has been faultless. Currently reading L129000 plus any before resets following firmware updates. As I said, touch wood... Graeme

lanetomlane Posted October 26, 2023 Share #13 Posted October 26, 2023 I've never experience any problem whatsoever with the SL2 since I bought it in September 2020.
Gavin Cato Posted October 26, 2023 Share #14 Posted October 26, 2023 I'd just like to add I've had a significant number of people (over a dozen) message me on instagram or my work email, who found my posts online via google but didn't post on this forum, who contacted me separately to ask how i fixed it / what happened. As I've said before my issue was with Leica's arrogant response & repair turnaround times. I'd love to still be on the system if it held together. It was a very expensive issue. Selling all the gear cost me a lot. I'm very glad for the people who have had no faults. 2
chris_tribble Posted October 27, 2023 Author Share #15 Posted October 27, 2023 Gavin - thanks for taking the time to post. It's a real dilemma. I love the glass. and, after a couple of days working with the S1r, I realise how much I like the simple sophistication of the SL2's interface and handling. I'm hoping that Leica can do a quick turn round so I can have both bodies working again (Leica UK and Germany have always treated me well) - though I'll keep the S1r as a backup. Fortunately, I don't have the pressure you have work-wise, so I've been able to manage OK. But if everything is a serious and high pressure money-job (weddings!), I completely understand your decision to sell out. Back in the day, I loved my Canon kit (especially the 85 f1.2 on the 5D4), and it never let me down. But I also really like what the M10-r and SL2 offer me, so I'll stick for the moment.
DadDadDaddyo Posted October 27, 2023 Share #16 Posted October 27, 2023 No problems that I'm aware of with my SL2. I don't think it has ever frozen on me. I'm a pretty slow shooter. I don't use continuous focus or do multiple shots in bursts. Pretty boring, I know, but the camera and the SL lenses have been rock- solid for me. VespertineD2K Posted October 30, 2023 Share #17 Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) I’ve had this happen to two separate SL2 cameras in quick succession, first with an SL2S, at an extremely critical moment on a high value commercial job when system error appeared. Borrowed a loan camera from Leica whilst my camera was in for repair (an SL2) and it happened again within the week! Very concerning issue, which makes me reluctant to use the Leica SL system at all, which would be a shame as I love the glass and simplicity of it, but can’t afford the risk of being worried about it on commercial jobs. I’ve since had to purchase an older SL, which I’ve been using flawlessly whilst my other camera is repaired (a 12 week repair turn around!), but this problem has caused me a lot of stress, and financial outlay - I’ve read rumours on other forums of compatibility issues with 64gb Lexar cards, which is precisely what I was using - it seems far fetched, but I’ve since been using Sandisk without any hiccups (albeit on the older SL system). Was anyone else who’s seen this error done so whilst using Lexar memory cards? Edited October 30, 2023 by VespertineD2K
chris_tribble Posted November 1, 2023 Author Share #18 Posted November 1, 2023 I have a memory of an SD card issue with an original SL. It can happen. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’d be really grateful if you could report on the issue thus: CAMERA MODEL and Serial - DATE of PURCHASE - YYYY/MM/DD DATE OF FAILURE (if known) - YYYY/MM
graeme_clarke Posted November 2, 2023 Share #19 Posted November 2, 2023 Hello Chris, Last May I replied to a post about cards. Tried to dig into the archive to find the original post without success! Here's copy of the post last May : "A few years ago had massive problem with a Lexar card on a SL 601- after a short while everything went black and the shutter was unresponsive. Camera and lens (24-90) went back to Leica. Problem with Lexar cards identified by Leica and advice to stick to Sandisk given - so I've used them since then without any issues. Changing the make of card will be worth trying". Still no issues with Sandisk 64gb cards... Graeme
HPFM Posted November 2, 2023 Share #20 Posted November 2, 2023 Hi, my system error end of September 2023 in Svalbard occured using Sandig extreme pro 128 with 300mb/sec.....so I don't know whether this is really a problem of sd-cards or anything concerning construction of the SL2 shutter. Hope that possible shutter problems will be solved with a SL3 😬
