Picked up a 21 apo a week or so ago from oc camera (I mention this because they had another one in stock if anyone is looking).

haven't had time to take it out, other than to shoot it up at the trees as the sun was setting.  image below is straight ooc.  no adjustments at all.

I can't figure out how to post a high quality image here, but I am really happy with the quality of the images.  first impression is the colors seem easier to work with than my 35 apo (?)

I shot 28/50 and then 25/50 for a long time.  switched to 35/70 and spent a good deal of time debating whether I should get 14-24, the WATE, or the 21 to complement the 35/70.

after scrolling through a ton of pics, decided to go with the 21.  extremely pleased so far (after pixel peeping a handful of tree shots. lol).

cheers.

+1. All I can say is that SL21 delivers beautifully. As does the other SL APOs. On my side, SL21 and SL35APO are on the top. I also love SL50Lux (not for its size and weight, but for a very pleasant rendering). On the longer side, I either pick SL90APO or, for a less perfect but still lovely rendering, Sigma 85mm DG DN f1.4. So many choises, where Leica’s SL APO Crons are all outstanding and internally consistent wrt colours.

Sigma 14-24 and WATE are also fine, but SL21 is a step or two) up. For astrophotigraphy, 21mm can be on the long side, so in this case Sigma 14-21, or Sigma 14mm DG DN, are good choises.

Thank you!   I love the way the SL 35 APO renders, and the 21 renders very similarly, from what i can tell.

looking back on my decision to purchase the 21 apo, I think my satisfaction with my 35 heavily influenced my decision to go with another SL APO over the convenience of a wide angle zoom in the end.  so far, i have no regrets whatsoever (in case this helps someone else making a similar decision).

my "70" is actually a 75 1.25 M.

other than dreaming of a 200 apo sl, i am very happy.

Rented it for a shoot. Couple of test images. It's just as good as the rest of the lineup. I'm conflicted on purchasing it, as I think 28mm suites me better and has better rendering, but this 21mm would be a godsend for event work and video. I can't justify keeping both.

for edge to edge sharpness I don't think you will be disappointed with the SL21 APO. I took this test shot as it was the perfect spot for testing a lens capability due to sheer amount of vegetation and looking at the image on my 4K monitor, everything is tack sharp.

The 21 APO will distort more than the 28. I'm happy with my 28 APO. An image the other day:

It has been wonderful lens for event photography. Ability to get in very tight spaces and get flattering results is quite impressive. I do turn off distortion correction first, as it makes faces more flattering.

You turn off distortion correction?  Interesting.  What camera?  I didn't even know there was an option to turn it off.

In Capture One under the Shape -> Lens Correction you can remove the distortion correction in the raw file. Thankful the lens has a simple barrel distortion uncorrected so it still looks clean without having any face distortion.

The 21 APO renders detail better than any wide angle lens I have used to date.

SL3 and 21 APO

.(Not sure what's going on with the banding in the sky. Perhaps the low resolution? This is not in the original file. Anyway the 21 APO is a fantastic lens)

Hi Bassett,

Would you please show us with and without correction by lens profile of the same photo in order to see how much the distortion is if uncorrected?

Thanks

Hi Sohail,

Do you mean 21 has more distortion is due to difference in focal length 21 vs 28?

I recall Zeiss M-mount 21 f/4.5 is claimed to be zero distortion.

Sure.

With Optical Distortion Correction:

Without Distortion Correction: Look how much more flattering it is to their faces. Additionally you get a wider field of view.

Thanks Bassett.  With these two pictures I can see the distortion correction is a trade off.

Hi Sohail,

optical distortion is a challenge to lens designer.  I appreciate Elmarit-M 28mm asph with very very low in optical distortion.

Yes, the wider of course you go the more digital correction for optical distortion will be needed. Which is why, I think we can surmise the 21 APO will necessitate more digital correction than the 28 APO.
