Around this time every year the milkweed pods begin to break open and scatter their seeds. This is good news for the Monarch butterflies because milkweed is their favorite food. The Monarch was recently named the official Wisconsin State Butterfly.

That makes sense. I suppose the concern is that it might take the monarchs off course. The area where I live is on their route. In past years I've seen tree branches here literally covered with layers of monarchs that stopped briefly during the migration.

One of the reasons not to plant milkweed is that it is toxic to a lot of other insects and animals.
