Regarding coded vs uncoded lenses with the M11-D:

The instructions seem to say I would need to use the app when attaching a lens without a 6-bit code in order to select an M lens profile. I could turn off lens detection in the app, however once I attach another 6-bit coded lens again, the camera would return to Lens Detection = Auto. That means that the next lens attached that is not 6-bit coded would use the last manually selected M lens profile, which could be an issue if I have now attached an uncoded lens of a different focal length. This means I'd need to open the app and select the appropriate profile.

  • Attach 6-bit coded lens = lens automatically detected
  • First time to attach an uncoded old 35 Lux = "unknown lens" would be registered like the M11/M11-P does, I assume
  • I connect the camera to the phone, open the app and select an M lens profile for closest match
  • I take that lens off and attach a 6-bit coded lens = lens detection returns to Auto mode
  • I now change to an old uncoded 50 Cron = camera reverts to the last used M profile, which was the 35 Lux profile I had previously selected
  • I must return to the app to select the correct M lens profile for the 50 Cron

And so on

Is that the expected behavior here? I feel like manually coding all my uncoded lenses would be the only "easy" way to use the M11-D for me.

Yes, that’s the expected behavior. My M10 works the same way. You can have one uncoded lens, but not two or more, without fiddling in the menu every time you change from one uncoded lens to another.

I wish then for the D model that when lens detection was set to be off, attaching a 6-bit coded lens would not reactivate it. Having to use the app for initial setup or occasionally to adjust something isn't a problem. But having to connect the camera to my phone and use the app every time I changed between uncoded lenses defeats the point of using a screenless digital M in my opinion.

My M11-D I picked up at the store on the first day.  It tells me that its firmware is 2.1.1.  The Leica USA site doesn't have a firmware download for 2.1.2 (the number for all the other M11's at present), but I am sure there will be differences between the models,  (the M11-P won't load the latest M11 firmware and the M11 won't load the latest M11-P firmware), and the M11-D has much larger idiosyncracies that its firmware must support.

So where should I look for the 2.1.2 version for the M11-D, and what improvements are claimed?  @elmars? Fotos talks readily to the M11-D, wakes up quickly, but doesn't seem to offer any update.  If there is new firmware, I would probably put it on the card and update the old way, as is described in the user's manual for the M11-D.

I found long time ago that M11 series can not TOTALLY switch off the len detection……when the camera reboot, the LD will turn to Auto again even I turned it off

Hi Scott,

Does your M11D with FW 2.1.1 perform normal ( without freeze )?

Maybe M11D work perfectly with FW 2.1.1 while other M11 variant need FW 2.1.2 as they have LCD screen & more buttons.

I guess complaint expect information will be displayed on LCD screen telling user what to do when encounter camera lock up, unfortunately the camera even with LCD screen is not that smart.

Version 2.1.2 for the M11-D cannot be found on the German Leica website. Perhaps Leica is skipping a release of this version so soon after the launch of the camera. But it is available for beta testers. I also know that Leica is working on further optimisations for all M11 cameras. Maybe there will be something new for the M11-D. However, version 2.1.1 is very stable, so there is no urgent need for 2.1.2.

Yes, it appears that you have to do all of that if you are using a mix of coded and un-coded lenses, annoying for sure if you are someone who changes lenses often but luckily that's not the case in my usage. I have only four Leica 6 bit encoded lenses, from a 28mm Elmar to a 50mm Summilux but the focal length I use about 90% of the time is 35mm and in that category I have the 35 Summilux Re-Issue, obviously coded..........My other 35's are the Summilux 1.4 V2 and the Summicron 35 V4 and the LLL 8e so right now if I switch from the 35 SR the camera reverts to that setting for the Summilux 35 V2 and the Summicron 35 V4 the others and that's just fine by me..........In fact I don't really care if "coding" is on anyway, I guess there's differences that it enables but it's never been anything too obvious for me, so I'm good with it the way it is, but I can understand what a PITA this could be for someone who switches out a variety of lenses much more often.

With the LensTagger LR plugin, you can edit the lens information in the EXIF files. I used it a lot when I had two uncoded lenses and kept forgetting to switch in the camera menu. But then I sent one in to Leica for 6 bit coding, so now I don't have this problem anymore. Whenever I put on the uncoded lens, the camera remembers it correctly.

it has to be 2.1.2 - i will otherwise not accept it at our local LeicaBoutique shall my m11d finally arrive these days.  see 2.1.2 here

As I said: I am not aware that 2.1.2 was officially released. If not and if not in the future there will be a better version than 2.1.2 soon for all M11 models. So I see no reason not to buy the M11-D because it has not 2.1.2. But everyone on his own.

i imagine that this firmware version frenzy causes the delays at LeicaUSA in shipping out the m11d to the various dealers such as my local LeicaBoutique...?

you are right, @elmars, i would of course still accept the m11d once it arrived at my store here, even with an older firmware - but then perhaps insist to do the upgrade either there on their counter, or i would just do it myself, gladly holding that piece of hardware in my hands finally...

ADDENDUM : you are correct, @elmars, no 2.1.2 seen on Leica's german website for the m11d - but the other M11* have the newest 2.1.2 firmware version listed.  i of course don't know if these firmware packages are interchangeable...

God, setting up and understanding how to work with this camera is making me feel so stupid, maybe I should have bought my sixth analogue M and taken a holiday with the change instead.........Lacking a convenient 13 year old child to help with understanding the new electronics is hobbling. But getting there, baby steps.

At the weekend I was trying to figure out how to charge the battery in camera, that took two days, ( the trick being that you cannot use just any USB charger or any port on a Mac, it has to be a high charging rate USB charger, 3.0 (?) or above )........Now all day today I have been trying to figure out how to connect the M11-D directly to one of my iMacs and finding the PtP mode select to enable that, ( I don't use/have an iPhone so that download option's out and anyway I wanted images to go directly to the Macs I do post production on )...............Eventually that penny dropped and I've got that sorted out, I think , hopefully..........( Thanks to clues from Elmars )

For me it's been so far a steep learning curve over the past's use of the M10's, including the M10-D, and more than once these past couple of days since the camera arrived here it was close to looking at the box it arrived in and was going to be sent back to the Store ASAP this week, but I'm stepping back from that cliff edge and will probably, maybe, keep it once I have nailed the rest of the set-up's I want and can then ignore, and also figured out the best post process regarding handling / transferring the files.......

It's is a beautiful thing for sure, I like the lighter weight, the new black paint, that the on/off switch is back where it should be and that nasty rear on/off/compensation dial has been sensibly replaced with the ASA selection dial, I mourn the loss of the M10-D's faux wind lever but a Thumbie will probably do that trick now you can get one in matte black paint, so I think the M11-D will most likely stay..........Probably.

The objectively smallest worries are sometimes the biggest - especially when it comes to Leica cameras.

I’m not going down the M11 rabbit hole - my M10-D will hopefully still have life in it when it eventually returns.

Having 5 different digital cameras which I use (Monochrom, M10-D, TL2, SL & X2D) each with its own operating system and complications.  I often struggle to remember the settings and where to find them.  For the M10-D, it’s easier to simply set it up like my M-A (but with a meter) and forget about anything else it can do.  I handed a photographer friend my X2D the other day - he explored it, played with it, then said “Hasselblad spent millions developing the software for this camera, and you have everything set on manual!”  I laughed, and asked “what else do you need?”.

Provided you can charge the battery and download your images, forget about the rest.  I guess it’s because I still think in simplistic film terms that I fix ISO (only changing when I need to) and leave white balance to do its own thing.  I never use continuous shooting, never use a self-timer, and have no interest in cropping or pixel binning or the other jiggery-pokery the M11 has to offer, so my set-up with the M11 would be very simple.

Have fun with it, and don’t fret the small stuff.  It’s the usability and image quality which count.
