I also was dismayed that the thumb rest (rewind lever) was removed from the M11-D. I found it very useful on the M10-D.

It is not an unreasonable expectation for a new camera to work as expected; is it?

My M11-D came with the latest firmware, 2.1.2. I would imagine all of them ship with this firmware and that mine is not alone.

There were reports that the very first M11-Ds did ship with the previous firmware version.

Anyone with an M11-D would mention they were using the latest firmware if they were indeed having freezes.

The only mention I saw on this forum about a freeze on the D version was from a returning troll user that has been again banned.

I don't think he has been overly enthusiastic about the M11 series, and thus not the M11-D either.

Regarding coded vs uncoded lenses with the M11-D:

The instructions seem to say I would need to use the app when attaching a lens without a 6-bit code in order to select an M lens profile. I could turn off lens detection in the app, however once I attach another 6-bit coded lens again, the camera would return to Lens Detection = Auto. That means that the next lens attached that is not 6-bit coded would use the last manually selected M lens profile, which could be an issue if I have now attached an uncoded lens of a different focal length. This means I'd need to open the app and select the appropriate profile.

• Attach 6-bit coded lens = lens automatically detected
• First time to attach an uncoded old 35 Lux = "unknown lens" would be registered like the M11/M11-P does, I assume
• I connect the camera to the phone, open the app and select an M lens profile for closest match
• I take that lens off and attach a 6-bit coded lens = lens detection returns to Auto mode
• I now change to an old uncoded 50 Cron = camera reverts to the last used M profile, which was the 35 Lux profile I had previously selected
• I must return to the app to select the correct M lens profile for the 50 Cron

And so on

Is that the expected behavior here? I feel like manually coding all my uncoded lenses would be the only "easy" way to use the M11-D for me.

Yes, that’s the expected behavior. My M10 works the same way. You can have one uncoded lens, but not two or more, without fiddling in the menu every time you change from one uncoded lens to another.

I wish then for the D model that when lens detection was set to be off, attaching a 6-bit coded lens would not reactivate it. Having to use the app for initial setup or occasionally to adjust something isn't a problem. But having to connect the camera to my phone and use the app every time I changed between uncoded lenses defeats the point of using a screenless digital M in my opinion.

My M11-D I picked up at the store on the first day.  It tells me that its firmware is 2.1.1.  The Leica USA site doesn't have a firmware download for 2.1.2 (the number for all the other M11's at present), but I am sure there will be differences between the models,  (the M11-P won't load the latest M11 firmware and the M11 won't load the latest M11-P firmware), and the M11-D has much larger idiosyncracies that its firmware must support.  

So where should I look for the 2.1.2 version for the M11-D, and what improvements are claimed?  @elmars? Fotos talks readily to the M11-D, wakes up quickly, but doesn't seem to offer any update.  If there is new firmware, I would probably put it on the card and update the old way, as is described in the user's manual for the M11-D.

I found long time ago that M11 series can not TOTALLY switch off the len detection……when the camera reboot， the LD will turn to Auto again even I turned it off

Hi Scott,

Does your M11D with FW 2.1.1 perform normal ( without freeze )?

Maybe M11D work perfectly with FW 2.1.1 while other M11 variant need FW 2.1.2 as they have LCD screen & more buttons.

I guess complaint expect information will be displayed on LCD screen telling user what to do when encounter camera lock up, unfortunately the camera even with LCD screen is not that smart.
